Tyan Thunder K7 - Memory Benches

One of the biggest factors driving the hype around the 760MP is its use of the newer, stronger, faster(?) DDR memory. SDRam is getting a bit tired in its old age, and RAMBUS is just too damned expensive (although it is getting cheaper). Is DDR our savior though? Let's see what "old faithful" SiSoft Sandra has to say (all memory tests were run with ECC disabled to show the highest performance):

Ummm... WOW!! Those are some pretty impressive numbers there. Our 760MP/Corsair PC2100 combo is leaving everything but the i860 P4 platform in the dust. Although the P4 puts up some very impressive numbers here, the 760/DDR combo should not be overlooked simply because of the cost factor (and those numbers are nothing to sneeze at either!).

Sandra is a nice benchmark, but lately we have found ourselves wanting more. A few months ago, Bill Hennings over at CPU Review found himself in a similar quandry and wrote his own little benchmarking application. If you haven't had the opportunity to try out MemTach for yourself, I would suggest that you get over there and download it. It could be the most comprehensive memory benchmark available right now and it is a tiny download to boot. As (almost) always... Bigger numbers are better.

Dual Palomino 1200's with DDR / Dual PIII 933's with PC800 RDRAM

Again we see the 760MP/DDR combo trouncing the competition. You might be looking at the numbers at the bottom of the charts there and thinking that the RAMBUS is making a comeback, but I think Bill said it best (click here for a comprehensive description of the benchmarks):

"Please note that the "Analyze" tests attempt to find the weaknesses in a given processor / chipset / memory system; and as such are not indicative of general performance. The Analyze tests were carefully designed to reveal the weak spots of caching strategies, chipset design, memory design and alignment penalties.

You should be most concerned with the memcpy, memset, "fill int", "sum int", and "random int" scores, the "Analyze" results are not indicative of general performance."

One of the main concerns with the i840/RAMBUS solution was the latency issues between system memory and the processors. If you remember (and we can see it above), the latency had a serious affect on the overall speed of the memory subsystem. Luckily the 760MP doesn't seem to suffer from the same problems.
