2CPU.com Video-Card Round-up

As a general rule, I don't read video card reviews, articles or round-ups. For the most part, I find them boring, repetitive and the authors usually confine themselves to only the "important" topics like 3d performance on a uniprocessor platform. "Here's the card, it's pretty. Here are the specs which few of you understand or care to understand, that we don't even understand but we pasted from the press kit. It runs Quake3 fast. This is what it costs. The end. Have a nice day!". Someone wake me up.

What about qualitative analysis of the finer points of the video card? 2d image quality is something that's generally mentioned but not expanded upon. The majority of video cards produced these days are geared to allow for dual displays out of the box; do we see indepth coverage of said dual-head implementations? Do we see the performance impacts of powering a second display in various situations? S-video output is another feature that's beginning to become more commonly desired and used, yet rarely tested and compared.

There are power users out there that simply don't require m4d l33t g4m1ng performance. I would imagine a sizeable portion of the readership of 2CPU.com simply don't have the time or the desire to constantly engross themselves in games. These people demand other things from their video hardware, like impeccable 2d quality, acceptable performance in certain CAD applications or even some punch when it comes to 3d rendering.

All these factors combined to motivate us to write the sort of article I'd like to read if I was in the market for a new video card (which I'm not, G550 for life yo!). We tried to round up as many video cards as possible. Not all of them are the newest and swankiest on the block (some are actually quite dated), but we wanted to at least include analysis of cards from all the major players in this industry. Furthermore, we will hit you with a smorgasbord of benchmarks on both a dual Athlon MP system and a dual Xeon workstation.

Cory and I also took the time to test the s-video implementations of all the cards in our round-up. We dug out a favorite anime series of ours on DVD and proceeded to make our own comparisons. We also used the 2CPU.com front page as a basis for examining the ability of each video card to display text legibly on a TV screen via the s-video output.

The cards to be tested?

  • NVIDIA Quadro4 700XGL 64MB
  • PNY Quadro4 550XGL 64MB
  • Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB
  • PNY Verto GeForce4 Ti4400 128MB
  • Matrox Millenium G550 32MB DualHead
  • Tyan Tachyon G9000 PRO 64MB
  • ATI Radeon 7500 64MB

As I said earlier, not the best and the brightest but reasonable representation is present for our little round-up.

Are you ready for a different type of video card article written from two different perspectives? Let's break down your reviewers today:

Jim

The self-proclaimed "Massa of the Masses" isn't much of a 3d gamer anymore. During his college years he was about as hardcore in the world of Quake2 as one could be. The Quake2 Symbol tattooed on his right arm is evidence of that. Jim's wants in a video card are relatively simple: Impeccable image quality, proper dual-display support, and enough 3d umpf for him to get his game on once a year when he's in the mood.

Jim is a Cancer who enjoys long walks, intelligent conversation, going to the movies and pepsi. Sorry ladies, this one's taken!

Cory

Someone with endless time for 3d gaming, Cory's demands are very different from Jim's. He requires enough horsepower to game at 1024x768 with both anti-aliasing and a certain measure of texture filtering enabled. In his eyes, the eye candy certainly enchances the ability to become immersed in the game. Also known for his tremendously anal and picky nature, he demands sharp 2d quality.

Cory is a Capricorn who enjoys watching inhuman amounts of Anime and playing games both on several consoles and his PC.

Let's start out by examining each of the cards tested in the round-up on an individual basis.
