Harpertown: New 45nm Xeons from Intel

SiSoftware Sandra XII.2008c (Cont'd)

I used to be a big fan of Ace's precompiled Linpack binary, but these days we have processors with L caches far larger than Linpack's largest (2mb) block size. Luckily, Sandra now has its own tool for measuring cache and memory speeds out to a far larger block size.

Due to the scale of the graph it's pretty hard to see, but the Harpertown machine scored over 1000 MB/s higher than the other test machines when the block sizes spilled-out into main memory.

Harpertown's tweaked cache and faster front-side bus help it out in the latency department as well. We're only talking a few nanoseconds difference, but less latency almost always helps in the real world.
