Ice Storm Fighters Game Technology Demo
Posted by: Hooz on: 01/15/2007 08:03 PM [ Print | 1 comment(s) ]
Multi-threaded gaming is becoming all the rage lately (Where have they all been for the last few years anyway?), and apprently Intel wasn't content waiting for other game developers to leverage their dual and quad-core processors. In a joint effort with Futuremark, Intel has released a multi-threaded game engine demo/technology preview designed to show what gaming can be like with multiple cores under the hood.
The demo has some pretty steep requirements and, as yet, only runs on Intel processors. I'm downloading it now to see if it lives-up to the hype.
Ice Storm Fighters is based on a multi-threaded game engine, and its performance scales with the number of processor cores as well as other PC platform components. Using a technique called "n-number threading," the Ice Storm Fighters game engine will generate as many threads as there are CPU cores present on the system. Ice Storm Fighters is intended to be a forward-looking game engine technology demo for Intel platforms. |

On Monday, Microsoft updated the four-month-old Beta 1 version of Microsoft Office 2007 with a "Technical Refresh" version. Office has shed the preliminary name "Microsoft Office 12" for its final name, Microsoft Office 2007, and sports an improved version of the new ribbon interface. Among the new changes to the interface is the new Office Button, two new themes, a small Quick Access toolbar, and new, highly-legible default fonts named Calibri and Cambria.

The release of Firefox 1.5 is almost certain to drive adoption rates even higher. The most noticeable improvement in the user interface is the ability to reorder tabs via drag-and-drop. Navigation is significantly faster, and application and extension updates are now pushed to the background.

In a move sure to astonish, Oracle has released a free version of its 10g database, dubbed Oracle Database 10g Express Edition.
I wonder if MySQL was gaining too much market share. Maybe the impending release of MS SQL2005 and its "Express Edition" has put some pressure on Oracle? Who knows what did it, but another good, free database is always a good thing.
Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE) is an entry-level, small-footprint database based on the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code base that's free to develop, deploy, and distribute; fast to download; and simple to administer. |
