Folding@Home
Folding@Home Windows SMP Client Public Beta
Posted by: Hooz on: 03/18/2007 06:51 PM [ Print | 2 comment(s) ]
A beta client with support for up to four threads has been released for Windows users. It appears to be a command line client only at the moment (and limited to 4 cores) so those with 8 cores or more would need to run multiple SMP clients. The download is available in the first post of this forum thread.
GPU Folding Explored

Geoff Gasior, of Tech Report fame, has posted an interesting look into the GPU Folding@Home client performance.
He even goes so far as to breakdown points-per-watt differences between CPU and GPU clients. Pretty cool stuff!
| Stanford's Folding@home project is already putting the Radeon's pixel processing horsepower to use with a beta GPU client that performs protein folding calculations on the graphics processor. According to Stanford, the GPU client runs between 20 and 40 times faster on newer Radeons than it does on a CPU, a claim that no doubt sends folding enthusiasts' hearts aflutter. Such an increase in folding performance is certainly tantalizing. We decided to give the GPU client a spin to see what we could find out about it. |
Congratulations Team Rage3D!

For those of you following our F@H team progress know that Team Rage3D is set to overtake us any minute.
We've been comfortable in our number 5 spot for quite some time, with only the occaisional blip on our radar. But, after a long, hard battle and a last minute rally from our ranks, Rage3D has finally done the unthinkable. Congratulations TR3D!
Don't take this as cause to get discouraged! The project still needs every one of our available CPU cyles... And who says we can't take our #5 spot back at a later date?

Folding@Home: A Call to Arms!

A few of the 2CPU F@H faithful have informed me that our #5 spot is in jeopardy! As of this moment, Team Rage3D is set to overtake us in 4.9 days if we don't step it up. This isn't the first time that our position has been threatened, but it is the closest we've been to being passed.
So... If you're not folding for 2CPU (or running another DC project for one of our many other teams), now might be a good time to start. Swing by the DC forums to see how you can help!

2CPU.com DC teams update!

Here at 2CPU.com we participate in a lot of distributed computing projects. The majority of them support SMP, which is great for a team such as ours with more SMP machines in use than your average distributed computing team. If you have a computer idling, why not join one of our DC teams? Help out with disease research (folding@home, find-a-drug), finding aliens (SETI@home), climate prediction, and a host of other projects!!
Recently, OC-AMD (OC-X in the forums), our FAH top producer and second in the world, has announced that he is scaling his production back significantly. It will be a great loss for the team and the project, but I'm amazed he kept his high production rate for so long. Congratulations again to your numerous milestones and achievements in FAH and I'm looking forward to your continued supprt for the project.
With this announcement, our FAH team, team 3074, would definitely have to step up to the plate to maintain their current position as fifth overall in the project. With OC-AMD accounting for over a third of team production recently, this definitely isn't an easy task but hopefully 2CPU.com will be up to the challenge.
