Vista/Office 2007 Day!
Posted by: Hooz on: 01/30/2007 08:39 PM [ Print | 2 comment(s) ]
Today marks the official release of the twins from Redmond, Windows Vista and Office 2007. There is a flurry of discussion around the 'net regarding these releases, but, like-em or hate-em, they're finally here.
I've been playing with betas and RCs for quite a while now, and I can say that I am one of those poor souls smitten by all the eye-candy in Vista and the increased functionality and usability in Office 2007.
In an ongoing effort to thwart pirates, MS has implemented a new licensing/activation scheme in Vista that has generated almost as much discussion as the OS itself. Today the Tech Report, umm, reports on Vista's new licensing model, and tries to explain what's to like and/or not like about it.

Microsoft Extends XP Support
Posted by: Hooz on: 01/25/2007 12:41 PM [ Print | 1 comment(s) ]
Microsoft has officially announced that it will continue to support Windows XP (Home, Pro and MCE) until April of 2009. This will quiet the rumors that Microsoft planned to abandon XP in an effort to push people to their new baby, Windows Vista.
Speaking of Vista, I'm on my way to the official Microsoft Vista/Office 2007 launch event this morning. If there is anything worth reporting, I'll post it here later today.

It's the end of Windows as we know it, and I feel fine.

According to the Gartner Group, Windows Vista will be the last "monolithic" operating system of its kind, at least to come from Redmond.
In my Clovertown performance review, I said that I thought virtualization would be quad-core's "killer app", but this isn't exactly what I had in mind.
Instead, the research firm predicts, Microsoft will be forced to migrate Windows to a modular architecture tied together through hardware-supported virtualisation. "The current, integrated architecture of Microsoft Windows is unsustainable - for enterprises and for Microsoft," wrote Gartner analysts Brian Gammage, Michael Silver and David Mitchell Smith. The problem is that the operating system's increasing complexity is making it ever more difficult for enterprises to implement migrations, and impossible for Microsoft to release regular updates. This, in turn, stands in the way of Microsoft's efforts to push companies to subscription licensing. |

Posted by: Hooz on: 10/09/2006 01:57 PM [ Print | 2 comment(s) ]
It looks like people that buy a computer with XP installed this holiday season (after October 28th) may just get a nice little bonus from Microsoft. According to this article, Vista will either be a free or very cheap upgrade, depending on the XP version installed on your machine.
For example, those who have Widows XP Professional, XP Tablet PC Edition, and XP x64 Edition would be entitled to the free upgrade. Those using Windows XP Home would be permitted to upgrade to Vista Basic for $49 and Premium for $79. No upgrade price was specified for Media Center Edition. |

Inside Microsoft Windows Vista Release Candidate 1
Posted by: Hooz on: 09/05/2006 02:38 PM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]
Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 is finally here. The most pressing question for RC1 is whether it shows that Vista is good enough to ship for consumers by 2007. Since recent Vista revisions have been focusing on improving performance, compatibility, and stability rather than adding features, there's not a lot to highlight that's truly new. Instead, here's a walkthrough of 100 screen shots recapping what Vista looks like from top to bottom.

Patching Up Windows
Posted by: Hooz on: 01/06/2006 01:58 AM [ Print | 6 comment(s) ]
NEW YORK (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. plans to release a patch for a new security flaw at its next scheduled update release on Jan. 10, leaving users largely unprotected until then from a rapidly spreading computer virus strain.
Ooo. Harsh.
"Microsoft's delay is inexcusable," said Alan Paller, director of research at computer security group SANS Institute. "There's no excuse other than incompetence and negligence." |

ActiveWin has posted some information about and screenshots of the the latest CTP of Windows Vista. It sure does look pretty, but I'm not entirely convinced that Vista is going to be the be-all/end-all that people are hoping it will be.
Gartner: Ignore Vista until 2008

Right from the mouth of Gartner:
And there you have it!
There is no compelling reason to rush into upgrading to the next version of Windows, says Gartner. Companies shouldn't rush to upgrade to Microsoft Windows Vista, according to analysts at Gartner, who believe most firms could safely hold back until 2008. |
Preview look @ OSX on x86 Platform
Posted by: admin on: 11/11/2005 04:31 PM [ Print | 9 comment(s) ]
In order to prevent unsavory characters from installing Apple's x86 version of OSX on just any hardware, the new OS will be bound to a specific "security chip" present only in Apple's own boxes. In this day and age, nothing is sacred though, as evidenced by this review at ZDNet.
Not only have they hacked it to run on standard x86 hardware, but they have posted a bunch of pictures and benchmarks. Very cool indeed.
When Steve Jobs announced the platform change, he publicly demonstrated Apple computers with Intel processors running an x86 version of Mac OS X. The OS is bound directly to the hardware by a special security chip. However, some developers have succeeded in circumventing this coupling, allowing the operating system to be installed on any x86 system, as this test report shows. |

eWeek has posted about the latest critical vulnerability posted by Microsoft, MS05-051.
Oh Lord, let's hope that's not the case. Zotob made my life bad for weeks in August. Get patched everyone! Read the entire article over here.
"This is a similar attack vector that could have the same impact as [the Zotob worm]," said Stephen Toulouse, program manager at the Microsoft Security Response Center. |
