1.7 GHz Athlon?

The Register is reporting that AMD is "quite confident" in its plans for a 1.7 GHz Athlon sometime in the second half of 2001. It'll still be based on a .18 micron process, so of course everyone is worried about heat, yada yada yada.
It should also be a concern that the Athlon doesn't possess an on-chip thermal diode to protect against overheating damage.
This is all moot. Why am I posting it? Because we're going to have Dual Socket-A boards by then baby. 2x 1.7 GHz... yeah... that's a lot of RC5 blocks. Read the rest over here.
