Momentus 5400 FDE.2 Hard Drive

As a pretty serious laptop user, I've often wondered what would become of my (personal) data should my laptop ever be lost or, dare I say, stolen. Sure, my machine is password protected, but as any decent system administrator can tell you, 5 minutes and access to a particular bootable CD is all you need to circumvent normal password protection.

Evidently Seagate has been thinking the same thing as they have introduced (PDF) the Momentus 5400 FDE.2 hard drive. The Momentus is a nifty 2.5" ATA/SATA hard drive with built-in (hardware-based) AES encryption. A simple user specified password is all that is needed to view and access the drive's encrypted contents. No password, no data. Simple. Effective.
