Intel Purchase Cray's Interconnect Hardware

The x86 chip giant, Intel, always looking to beef up their portfolio has entered a deal with Cray. For $140 million in cash, Cray will sell Intel their Interconnect Hardware Unit and IP, but still maintain some access to the intellectual property and rights. The Interconnect Hardware is a part of the HPC that allows the company to build larger scale x86 systems. However, that very hardware has been very useful to smaller x86 semiconductor company, AMD.
