AMD aim Opteron at the Cloud

Black eyed and swollen lip, AMD has been through tremendous times financially with dud product launches and luke warm performance to its competitors. But, not one to throw in the towel, the company is now aiming their processors at the cloud. The Opteron 4300 and 3300 based server processors featuring a maximum of eight cores and 15% performance increase over the predecessor as well as socket compatible. Check out the blurb here.
AMD still has me sold...

AMD has a strong play in the virtualization market. I see them as significantly undervalued. Yes, Intel processors are faster in nearly every category: but unless your apps require a lot of speed, there is really no advantage to them in the datacenter. Most Datacenters are heavily virtualized, when you look at the price/core of Intels as compared to AMD, you find that paying a 30-100% premium for no real performance gain for most applications is really foolish.
Will an AMD-based webfarm outperform an Intel-based webfarm? No, but who cares. It is irrelevant: The Cloud is built on resilience, not raw power and monolithic applications. The Cloud thrives on averages, not every tick and bogomip.
