533MHz FSB Xeons Anyone? Yes Please!

Posted by: Jim on: 09/13/2002 12:20 AM [ Print | 9 comment(s) ]

I was talking to some of the ladies in #techreport on irc.openprojects.net and decided to actually hit their website to check for any possible newsage. They had a link to an Inquirer article detailing Intel's plans for their Xeon line of processors, which they talked about at IDF.
Fister also outlined details of 533MHz front side bus server chips for dual processors machines aimed at the workstation and server market.

He also spelled out details of its up and coming Granite Bay and Placer chipsets, and the Plumas 533 chipset.

These chipsets, along with other Xeon microprocessors, are due to arrive between now and the end of the year.
We'll take four. Thanks Intel. Hi.

Yeah, when I initially typed that out I added the hyphen out of sheer habit from typing out the URL once a day. :-P"

happens to everyone, buddy... ;) apart from times when i spend spec'ing out a new rig, the rest of the time i'm sitting on the side line also... :(

spikegifted.net "At the very beginning of the 19th century chemists generally thought that compounds from living organisms were too complicated in structure to be capable of artificial synthesis from non-living things, and that a 'vital force' or vitalism conferred the characteristics of living beings on this form of matter." Well, how wrong were they? So much for dogma...

I'm missing something in Intel's roadmap. What is the purpose of the Plumas chipset if the Placer is coming out around the same time? Isn't the Placer better in every way? (ICH4, 533FSB, Dual support, AGP 8x, etc.)

What purpose does the Plumas provide?

Again from Mikeshardware.co.uk

Intel E7501 chipset (Plumas 533) for Intel Xeon (Prestonia) is expected to be released in Q4 alongside Prestonia B. Plumas 533 is the 533Mhz FSB capable version of Intel's E7500 Plumas chipset. This chipset is expected to be identical to the E7500 apart from official support for a 533Mhz FSB speed, the support of Socket 604 and presumably DDR266 SDRAM (to keep memory access synchronous). Plumas 533 will use the same ICH3-S South Bridge as the E7500. It should be noted that Socket 604 is expected to be backwardly compatible with Socket 603.

Intel E7507 chipset, formally known as Placer, for the Xeon processor (Prestonia) is expected to be released in Q4. Placer is the Dual Processor version of Granite Bay, offering 533Mhz FSB support, Dual Channel DDR200/266 and AGP 8X. Placer will use Intels ICH4 South Bridge, providing USB 2.0 support.

So Placer is the chipset with more cutting edge technologies.... therefore $$$++.

I read all that, but it still doesn't make sense on why they would bother to release the Plumas. Seems redundant, except the Placer is better.

I guess Intel wants to keep the separation between their server and workstation chipsets. Like they have right now with E7500 and i860.
