AMD Athlon64 FX-53 Reviews
Posted by: Jim_ on: 03/18/2004 10:03 PM [ Print | 14 comment(s) ]
Today is the day of Athlon64 FX-53 reviews, apparently. Let's round-up the reviews written by the usual suspects. I'm sure more than one of you are down with AMD's peppy Athlon64. That should be enough to hold you down for awhile. AMD, if you're listening, our readers like uniprocessor platforms too. Maybe you should hook us up with an Athlon64 or two. :-)

probably the only thing that would put me off buying one of these bad boys is that the socket is going to be made redundent in a few months time. I think i will wait until the new socket is established before i move and get another AMD cpu rig. Hung like a donkey. Go like a horse! |

The Athlon FX uses the socket 940, like the Opteron. Not the Athlon 64 socket 745. (which is heading to the dust bin this fall) |

Does anyone even care to benchmark these with 64-bit software anymore? Or does noone care because 3dmark and Comet Cursor have yet to be ported? |

But what prevents you from putting a Socket 939 CPU on a Socket 940 board? In other words, if you bought a system with an FX53 (940 pin) now, you'd be able to upgrade it to an FX55 (939 pin) in the future, no...? RMN ~~~ |

Yes, that much I think everyone here knows. But i_wolf posted:
Which is what I don't get. Current (socket 940) Athlon FX motherboards should be perfectly compatible with future (socket 939) Athlon FX / 64s. RMN ~~~ |

Yes thats true, however current Athon motherboards do not support PCI express. Future motherboards with PCI express support are unlikely to support socket 940 athlon FX's. While this may seem like a bit of an assumption on my part, Anand and other reviewer would appear to be of the same opinion.
That is a bit of an assumption IMO. The reason i say this is that we do not know that the pin layout of 939 chips will allow their use in socket 940 boards. It is altogether quite possible that a 939 chip will not even fit in a 940 board. Of course if im incorrect in this statement, by all means correct me and please point to a location which verifies that 939 chips will work in 940 boards. So far I haven't read anything validating this possibility. Regards i_wolf Hung like a donkey. Go like a horse! |

True. The Inquirer (who usually seem to be well informed of AMD's plans) have said "we presume the 939 chips will fit in 940 sockets, otherwise motherboard manufacturers will go bonkers", but they haven't made any definitive statements yet, so it's possible AMD makes the layouts completely incompatible. But you should still be able to buy Opterons 1xx and use them in the current (socket 940) boards. There are no plans to change the Opteron's socket, and IIRC, the FX chips are priced at exactly the same as the Opterons of the same clock speed. RMN ~~~ |

I dont think PCI-E will be the killer upgrade for a while. I think it'll take a generation or 2 for the chipsets to be as fast as PCI/AGP chipsets now are.... So unless my computer has an untimely death, Iam not going outa my way to get PCI-E, until next summer at the earliest... |
