HardOCP has linked to this AMD press release where they challenge Intel to a duel of dual-core processors.
In the spirit of fair and open competition, AMD (NYSE:AMD) today issued a challenge to Intel to conduct a head-to-head competition of dual-core x86 server processors. AMD

AMD will get smoked when the Pentium M based Server chips are released but for now the Opteron 875 or whatever the highest end Dualcore Opteron is is much faster than any Xeon. 121 total Ghz, 304GB in total memory... Any minute, now. Honest. Just like the Opteron instantly crushed everything else when it was released, remember? Oh, wait... RMN ~~~ |

You miss the point. I think AMD is strictly wanting 64X2 to take on Intel's DXXX series. Bechmark wise, it's no contest (not even close)... BUT.. the AMD dual core desktop chips can more than twice as much as Intel's dual core. Would be very nice to see AMD dual core chips totally replace their desktop chip lines (including using desktop like pricing). Intel is having to do some serious catch up... we'll see if the dual core Xeons will be able to out do AMD... My guess is that it will at least make them competitive again, and since Intel is still a much heavier gorilla... that's good enough until they can do something more radical (I just hope the rumors are false with regards to using VLIW crap though). Remember that AMD has a quad-core (though not shipping yet). Intel is now admitting that they only know how to bring TWO CPUs together effectively.. and interesting admission to say the least. Even today, you can slap dual core AMDs into an existing dual or quad Opteron board (some restrictions... usually just weak power to the sockets) without having to go through the pains of a new socket. Intel pretty much banks on the assumption that migrating to beefier CPUs means that you are going to buy a whole new machine (or at least new mb) which has the proper socket for that new architecture. Not saying that AMD won't have to move to a new socket someday, but the existing 940 is showing excellent flexibility/longevity (if you have the power to the sockets to handle the additional cores). AMD wisely had the potential for higher bus IO even with the Slot-A. They've since elaborated on the EV6 bus they got from DEC. Intel's solution so far has been to up the FSB speed. But the design is still a bottleneck. I think it shows in the dual and quad opteron vs dual and quad Xenon server benchmarks that AnandTech has put up. Does Intel's approach of simply upping the FSB really have legs compared to AMD's approach? I think not. My SMP rig Merlin |

There does appear to be come confusion about this. Does anyone have the text of the actual challenge (ad) from the NYT?? I mean.. does it make sense that AMD is challenging Intel to try to compete with its archaic Xeons against dual core Opteron? (as the trade rags are stating) For obvious reasons, Intel will decline. I was under the impression the challenge would bit AMD 64x2 against the Intel DXXX, but the trade rags say AMD is putting forth its Opteron platform. Easy win for AMD right now. Maybe the point is, that AMD have their dual-core Opterons for servers out already and widely available, while Intel have the desktop dual-cores in numbers ok but not dual-core Xeons. Everywhere in that opening news story it is talking about servers, server processors, server platforms, nothing to do with desktops (P4 D-series). So I don't think it's AMD wanting to compare their apples to Intel's oranges, it's more a case of AMD indicating "oh, that's right, you guys don't have your apples in a pile yet...". Also, AMD especially mention power consumption be considered too, so that's yet another winning strategy for them at this point in time. Awww, poor Intel is behind (again). I think the point is that intel is expected to announce their dual core hack job for Xeon this weekend, to which AMD can proudfully and rightfully crush them with their much better designed processor. Stop being a cry baby Intel zealot, the netbust architecture is a failure and was from the beginning. Let me know when they have dual core Pentium-M chips on the desktop, maybe then they'll be worth more than an easy laugh. Heatware Ebay feedback |

Draco.. Intel know it made some huge mistakes and stayed in the "my Ghz is bigger than your Ghz" camp for too long. They were also completely blind sided by AMD who suprised them (and I cannot over emphasize "surprise") with lower power consumption while providing greater processing power. I can promise you that Intel is rapidly (not to sound like a broken record... I cannot over emphasize "rapidly") making changes to rectify both situations. AMD cetainly holds the crown and may hold it for awhile longer, but Intel is NOT sitting idle (and they still command the marketshare consistent with their anti-trust tactics). Best processor on the desktop AND the datacenter belongs to AMD today (if only it would turn into more serious marketshare figures). Tomorrow, look for Intel to fire back big with competitive solutions that cost less (weird) and use a LOT less power. It would be almost perfect if, in the spirit of unbiased journalism, a bunch of *independent* hardware review sites (including this one, perhaps) would pitch in to buy a decent high-end Dell and submit it for this challenge. I don't have an idea of the target price-range, but I certainly don't want to bankrupt my favorite sites. When the benchmarks are done, these sites get the first crack at publishing the results and then the Dell could be raffled or auctioned off. AMD may even get in the spirit and offer their machine as well! -SUO SuperMicro X7DCA-L-O (mATX) | 2x Intel Xeon L5420 | 6x 2GB Kingston Reg DDR2-667 | Intel G2 160GB SSD + 2x WD2002FYPS + Seagate 4TB | GalaxyTech 8800GT HDMI| 2x Asus MS228H | Win7 Ultimate x64 |
