AMD Opteron 866 Tested

Posted by: duke on: 04/13/2005 01:44 PM [ Print | 13 comment(s) ]

The Inquirer has posted a special hardware roundup featuring some preliminary benchmarks from an Opteron 866. Dual-Core anyone?
When compared to an Opteron 248, the 866 was a winner in all tests - PC Mark, Aqaumark, 3Dmark 03, Super Pi, Content Creation and Business Winstone and Sandra. The differenes varied from 1% to more than 100% in Sandra, showing that some benchmarks were not ready for dual core let alone dual processors. More interestingly, even a dual Opteron 248 were not able to beat a single Opteron 866. AMD has done a fantastic job here.
You can review the benchmarks over here.

In a somewhat related news, AMD seems to have won a trade show award for best cpu maker. The kicker is that the trade show was sponsored by intel and an intel rep was handing out the award. Check out the inq's link here.

Who want to call Dell and ask if they're now going to use the "best CPU manufacturer", or go with a second rate manufacturer such as Intel hehehe

The tests were done on a Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895 dual opteron board with a nForce Pro 220 chipset.
Nice to know you may not need a new motherboard to run either duallie singlecore or dualcores. :)

I would have preferred more benchmarks that actually take advantage of multiple CPUs/cores. Rendering in Max/Maya for example... I guess beggars can't be choosers.

I love how I accidently put that link into babelfish as Korean and it translated almost every other phrase to "national disgrace."

I thought the 1 x 866 compared to 2 x 248s was kool. Just wonder how much the lowest speed dual core opteron will be =\

Person type national disgrace, Dae On Go under Jung, national disgrace and Dual Core shoe polish? ! ? HKEPC department? AMD Dual Core Opteron, watch? ? Answer $$

In other words, for the type of person who thinks it would be a national disgrace to put the CPU die under [Carl Gustav?] Jung, using shoe polish [as the thermal compound], the HKEPC department has a dual-core Opteron watch. Only problem: it's very expensive.
