Posted by: HEMI on: 01/10/2003 10:13 PM [ Print | 7 comment(s) ]
Angstrom has posted specs for their new Titan64 series 1U Opteron rackmount machines, according to an article over at The Inq.
The company is calling the boxes the Titan 64, with support for 32- and 64-bit Linux and MS OSes, just like the Beachhead boxes.

![]() You realise that all these different Opteron servers that have been posted on 2cpu lately (Angstrom, Polywell) have all just been rebranded Newisys servers... www.newisys.com Look at the specs, they are all just copies of the Newisys specs... |

![]() NewIsys has *said* they want to licence their design out to manufacturers. I guess they're starting to succeed. 8-) 2xCel500 (oc600) on a BP6 and 2xCel533 (oc600) on another BP6 | 2xXP1800+ on a s2460 and 1xXP1800+ (so far) on a s2462 |

![]() you're probably better off buying one of these though cheaper + better. |

That's a pretty sweeping comment considering the Opteron servers haven't actually been released yet, and all preliminary benchmarks point towards a pretty tight race. Cheaper: spoke to a few people from angstrom micro a few weeks back. we were thinking of buying some of these, until we found out just what a mistake that would be (though a lot of that hinges on price). Better: well, we all know what AMD's estimate SPECcpu2000 performance for 2GHz Opterons with 1MB cache is. Just compare that to Itanium, where it's ahead in SPECint, and _BEHIND_ a 1GHz 3MB I-2 in SPECfp. Add to that the fact that these early opteron boxes will be coming out at 1.4GHz, not 2GHz, and there you have it. By the time opteron moves in volume, I-2 will be at 1.5GHz and 6MB of L3. Reckon AMD are gonna crank out anything to compete before 2004? Whereas with the I-2 box, it's just a chip-upgrade. If you need bleeding edge performance, I-2 is the way to go. They're out, now, and they work. You get a real warranty. The compilers have been out for years. Just as an aside, when are people going to realise that to use x86-64 as anything more than a glorified xeon box, they're _also_ going to have to recompile their software. Hell, people will probably be using the intel compiler =) These newisys boxes might be fine, but where are the compilers? Oh yeah, there's GCC. ![]() |

![]() Im guessing they're using the new LSI U320 asic because they said it only supports mirroring. If they were using the new Adaptec asic, it would support both mirroring & striping.
