Another Tyan Thunder K7 BIOS Update (v2.06)!

I noticed this by way of Anandtech. Electic Tech has an updated BIOS for the Thunder K7 available, version 2.06.

I usually wait three BIOS releases before buying a new board. This is especially true with Tyan. They rush the board to market before proper testing. |

Actually i'll wait for VIA KT266MP, i enjoy fighting southbridge bugs and tussling with 4in1 builds. |FAQ's|Heatware-Remedy{WcS}|Dual760|Beerology| |

As far as rushing to market, this thing was slated for release months ago. There was no rushing involved (it was actually delayed multiple times). I have used every Tyan board since the release of the Tomcat IIID. Every server or workstation I build has a Tyan board. My last workstation board was the Tyan Thunder DLUAN-GX motherboard. The only reason I replaced it was AGP 2X. On four of the boards, I was warned by Cantek.com to wait because of BIOS or Chipset related problems. This included the Tomcat IIID and IVS. The worst problem was the Tyan Tiger 133. It worked for about 2 months and caused havoc with SCSI controllers due a problem with the VIA chipset. My office supplier does not even carry Tyan boards any more due to problems with several of them. If you wait long enough, Tyan usually fixes the bugs. It takes 3 BIOS revisions to do it. What do you think of the Tyan Thunder i840? It was re-released with the fixed MTH. Any idea when the Serverworks WS chipset is supposed to be released? I was told by Serverworks and Supermicro that it was this quarter. |

What you're saying is true about virtually every motherboard I've ever used. The main boards that I've used are from Supermicro. Not one of the systems that I've built from them has ever been solid right off the block. It has always taken several revisions to get it right. I haven't bought the new AMD/Tyan board, but I feel fairly confident in it considering that it's the flagship product for AMD and Tyan - they're going to polish that baby. They've already released at least two public bios revisions since the motherboards introduction. That's a good sign to me, not a bad one. .jeremy |

I am wondering if any problems will happen if the board is populated with 512 MB ECC PC2100 modules. I am planning on going to start with 1 GB (2x512) and going to 2 GB (4x512). Some of Tyan's board had problems with 512 MB modules in the past. |

The forum exists for asking questions and sharing information. You seem combative in your attitude. Yes, I am running various setup ideas for users to examine and ask about. AMD and Tyan on working with 1st generation technology in the K7. I found that asking questions prevents you from making the same mistakes. The hardware I am installing is all high quality. The problem is compatibility. I had this with the ATI Rage Fury. It was not compatible with my SB Live, 3COM USB Modem, and Adaptec 2940UW controller. After working with ATI for over 4 months, I replaced the adapter with the Guillemot Maxi Gamer Xentor 32 and everything worked well. I only scrapped a $300 ATI adapter. I was able to sell it for $100. I can point out other compatibility issues since the IBM XT. I am planning to purchase over $3000 in components. I do not want to have the same scenerio. It takes longer than the return warrenty to test and tweak a component. |

Most of what you said on configurations was useful. Some of it was not worth writing. If you do not like what I write do not respond. Move on to the other postings. I am reading through all the responses and deciding on the configuration this weekend. The information on 32-bit or 64-bit RAID controllers was worthwhile. Experience only takes you so far. With new technology, it is good to ask questions. I would have purchased the Tyan Thunder i840 last year if I did not ask questions about it. Tyan ended up recalling the boards. I hope you never end up with a piece of hardware that causes problems. About getting rid of a computer after 12-18 months. I usually just keep upgrading pieces. The MSI 694D board I currently have was purchased until the new server boards were released. I will be keeping the new upgrades for several years. Not much more to do to it for increased performance. |
