It looks like Apple/IBM are following nVidia's path of using HyperTransport for the connection between the north and the south bridges:

Per http://www.apple.com/powermac/architecture.html:

The HyperTransport protocol integrates the Power Mac G5

Question: I'm about to get our graphic designer a new mac. Will the current OSX Jaguar apps run on the new OSX Panther or would I have to buy totally new 64-bit apps once Panther rolls around? Anybody?

32-bit applications will continue to run in Panther as it would in Jaguar. The PPC 970/G5 processor used supports both 32-bit and 64-bit PowerPC applications (kind of how the AMD64 processors can run 32-bit and 64-bit x86 applications).

32-bit applications will most likely be limited to the 4GB memory barrier and will run in it's own memory space (at least somewhat isolated from 64-bit applications).

... at least, that's my understanding.

I just tried to order 1(just for fun) and the estimated ship date was August. Oh well, nothing like another apple "pre-release" of technology.

Looking at the system diagram, they have a PCI-X HT tunnel, with two 100MHz slots (133 with only one card plugged in), and one 133MHz slot. I wonder if they are using the AMD 8131 PCI-X HyperTransport tunnel on their motherboards? That would surely explain all those rumors of AMD-Apple cooperation. Wouldn't make much sense for Apple to reinvent the wheel here. Anyone else know of any other PCI-X HT tunnels in existence besides the 8131?

Iwill MPX2, 2x Barton @ 16*133=2133MHz, 1024MB Reg ECC DDR, Radeon 9700 pro, 4x 40GB Maxtor D740X in RAID10 on 3ware 7410, 500W EPS12V PSU, unstable ATM :(...

i've gleemed from /. and the official spec that apple isn't playing entirely fair - when the benches were run on an intel compiler the dual xeons beat the apple - worth bearing in mind. (the apple benches were on gcc)

note, i'm not claiming i worked the above out hence the fyi :)

performance aside, apple have certainly done it again on the aesthetics.

I'm wondering if this means their dual G4's will become affordable, and if so when?

As for performance, it all looks good (very good), but I want to see some more reviews and information than just what Apple has on their site.

suprisingly cheap too. I mean, sure you'll still have to get more ram, and some quick disks. but by apple standards, quite cheap.

Shake on mac is looking pretty damn tasty now! :)

Not only that, but they used a cutomized version of GCC for the Mac and used a standard version of GCC for the Pentium. From the report:

For the Mac:

"* Installs Apple's version of the GCC compiler (version 3.3 build 1379)" ...

For the Dell:

"* Downloaded GCC version 3.3 (gcc-3.3.tar.gz) from http://gcc.gnu.org"

Nice to see such impartial and reliable information coming from Apple's marketi^H^H testing department. :) I've actually seen some people write that "this is fairer because it uses the same compiler". Yeah, right. I'm sure 99% of Windows software is compiled with GCC...

Design-wise, I think it's ugly as hell, but as long as it gives Intel / AMD a reasonable run for their (our?) money, it's welcome.

Now I think the real question is... when will Apple finally ship a real mouse with their computers? :D

No idea if they'll have an Opteronimized version, though.

I just reviewed the documentation posted on Apple's website. You are correct. 32-bit PPC copatability is assured. Just like AMD64. Plus Panther has built-in Samba and interoperability with Active Directory. In other words, it plays nice on MS networks.

In a related side note, Intel released the 3.2 GHz p4 (800fsb with HT of course) :D, so intel still has the fastes cpu on the market 3.2ghz, too bad it is only a 32bit proc :(
