How does a combination of Slackware and Gentoo sound? It sounds pretty good to me, so I thought I'd post this review of Arch Linux 0.7.
Arch Linux might be considered a cross between Slackware and Gentoo. It maintains the simplicity and stability of Slackware (not as stringent perhaps as Slackware but stable nonetheless) and the speed of Gentoo. You can read the rest of the review over here.

I actually heard about this distro from distrowatch.com and was curious about it. (So I read the review and gave it a shot). Its pretty good actually, coming from trying out various distros. (Good install documentation, I was up and ready to rock'n'roll in 20min. Forums are friendly, with useful stickies for newbies.) Well, its advantage is that you don't have to compile everything like Gentoo. This is good if you don't have a fast CPU like C3. (Which can take a day or two to get everything up the way I like it). I tried it on my EPIA (PD10000, 1Ghz "Nehemiah")...No problems there, nice and smooth. Don't use it with C3 CPUs that are older than "Nehemiah"...You get issues. (since this is a i686 optimized distro, and older C3 CPUs require i586 to work without issue). I like these kind of distros: its not "point-n-click", but still quite easy to setup, and allows plenty of customization. Its quite good for newbies who dare to go beyond the "point-n-click" world. It brings me back to the good old DOS days. I just love that sh*t, when I get full control of what I want. I think it strikes the right balance for a Linux enthusiast without spending alot of time setting up. Its one of those good ones you gotta try.
