Canucks see "Planet of the Apes": Hilarity Ensues...

Posted by: Jim on: 07/28/2001 06:33 AM [ Print | 72 comment(s) ]

What should three geeks do on a boring Friday evening for giggles? How about pile into the Mitch-mobile and venture off to Sudbury to catch the opening of Planet of the Apes? Well that's exactly what we decided to do. All in all, I enjoyed the movie... Relatively interesting storyline, cool special effects, and there were apes... that talked... (The ending left a bad taste in my mouth, though.)

I always have fun at the movies. Half the time it has absolutely nothing to do with the movie itself. It's the 'people watching' that you get to engage in before the movie even starts. Let's face it, a movie theatre is generally a genetic bouillabaisse. All walks of life jammed into a big room. The burgeoning new social class that provides endless entertainment for me however is the Icy Hot Stuntaz. You know the type: Upper-middle class teenage males with a penchant for wearing tank-tops, hooded sweat-shirts, pants big enough to double as a parachute, heavily laden in jewelry, happily driving Dad's volvo (or the ones with part-time jobs drive $5,000 dollar cars with $10,000 worth of modifications) from one social engagement to the next. They were out en masse this evening. We even saw some baby-Stuntaz, or Stuntaz-in-training if you will. They were cute little fellas, I wanted to run up to them and ask them to say 'G' just so I could pinch their cheeks. These characters -really- make me laugh, and I eagerly await the day one of them has the misfortune of being rude to me in public. At that particular moment, I'll launch an incredibly witty verbal assault that will no doubt make their head(s) implode.

If you should see these people in public, keep your distance. Coming in direct contact with one of these individuals could lead to the transmission of the Stuntaz-Syndrome. If this happens and you start to feel certain urges to run out and buy tank-tops and/or jewelry, please consult your physician ASAP. This has been a public service announcement.

*sigh*

I'm told I need to get out more...the problem with that is I seem to run into *everybody* I know from highschool. Mind you, I've only graduated this year and therefore am still quite sick of these people...

Anyway, I was greated by quite a rude audience when I went to see it earlier today. However, myself and the few other curtious ppl in the theater kept our mouths shut and let the noisy f*ckers bitch about every little thing...or state the obvious.

I was however appalled at the reaction of the audience when wahlburg kissed her at the end.

Apparently they seem to forget what the focus of the original was about...

No, the "big ending" was so unspeakably lame that you could never predict it. It comes flying out of left field in the last 2 minutes and leaves you going "WTF?".

The movie was decent, a little above average, I'd say. The original was much better, though. Everything was presented in a more believable fashion.

If you're a little behind on your movie-watching, I'd probably rate the last four movies we've seen like this:

1. The Fast and the Furious
2. Final Fantasy
3. Planet of the Apes
4. Watching paint dry
5. Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider just barely beat out "digging your own heart out with a spoon" for 5th place. The boobies saved it. Don't they always?

Mind you that's just my take, YMMV, etc., etc., blah blah blah.

They are convenient carrying handles :) There are Some "Rice Boys" here in Portland Oregon that put those huge lightning rod/fins on the tailgait of their pickup trucks too.

I must say that I have been trying to make some sense of this sub-species for some time now and your article sheds some welcome light.

Thanks

OMFG, I checked out the icy hot stuntaz site. Thats some funny crap.
Over on the right you can see bad-ass BLAZE on his brand new Firebird. This thing is like crazy fast and crazy sweet. Rolls on Dubs made by TIKIA and uses dunlop to roll. He aint down with systesms and shit, just speeed. when we roll it out to the races we can smoke nearly anything, Vipers, Rustangs, Crapmaros, and list goes on. Ya cant win, so don't even try.

Thats from the site. Obviously these dumbasses have never ridden in a Viper. There is no way in hell a firebird would stand a chance against a viper. Pure and simple. The firebird has maybe 300 pregnant horses while the old viper has 450. The new one comes with 500. Thats all stock too. Ahhh well. Not everyone can be as smart as the average person.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who liked "The Fast and the Furious". I actually thought it was a very well done movie. Although... I am a little more partial to American Muscle myself.

AS I recall the firebird and the Camaro are essentially the same cars. Or at least they used to be.

*shrugs* the new camero SS turns 850 horses...that's not exactly stock, but it is factory. TO bad chevy's canning gorgeous, that's one kickass car the camero.

I am a 16 year old student in grade 11. I have been an avid visitor of this website for many months now. However, now realising that because I wear baggey pants and hooded sweatshirts that I fit into the "icy hot" sterotype that it seems I'm no longer welcome here. I apologise that we all don't have jobs that pay out in 6 figures so we can drive Vipers. I might add that the majority of under 25 computer nerds are much like me. I could go on sterotyping everyone who has so far posted a reply to this post as fat, lazy, ugly, heavily beaten on and unpopular, but i won't, as i'm not as pathetic as you people. This is suposed to be a site concerning computers, not societys misconceptions. You have lost a loyal reader Jim, stupid mistake.

Is the ending of Planet of the Apes the same as the original, where they see the statue of Liberty's head, and realize that they were on Earth the whole time?

Cheers, STaSh

Nope. It takes place on another planet, actually. This version differs from the original a fair bit. Treat this one as a popcorn flick. The original was intelligent, but there was no effort at that this time around.

no...it does involve several other well-known US monuments though and gives a nice segway to a flip-flopped escaped from the planet of the apes.

Ice: just chill man, one of the true tests of the human mettle is the ability to laugh at one's self. All of my friends and I take turns doing out best to insult each other, the worse the insult the harder the laugh. Those that can't laugh stop hanging out with us. But I guess as long as there is stereotyping there'll be division amungst us.

Just remember that everyone gets to make fun of some one some time...

Heh, no harm intended!

Feel free to take a shot at me and the stereotype I belong to: Conservative computer-geek male, early twenties who's recently finished post-secondary education and started into the workforce only to become disenchanted with the whole work experience. We drive the afformentioned $5000 dollar vehicles minus the $10,000 worth of modifications (in my case, a honda civic coupe no less!). We're stuck between a rock and a hard place as we're at the age where you know it's time to start looking for that 'one' person to spend the rest of your life with, but the other part of us wants to stay young and revert to teenage angst. We buy RRSPs instead of fashionable clothes, begin to complain 'about young people these days', and begin using colloquialisms that our parents used when we were growing up and we swore we would never repeat.

We're a sad bunch indeed. sigh.
