Cray Unleashes Red Storm: Opteron-based supercomputer!

Mikey is running a post today about Cray's "Red Storm", a supercomputer which uses a total of 10,368 Opterons.
The system is cooled by an ingenious fan system located under the store, and everything in the system runs on the Linux operating system, with open source "Lustre" used for the file system.With such power, the Autobots don't stand a chance of defeating the ruthless Deceptacons. I can hear Megatron taunting Optimus Prime already. Anyways, you might want to read up on this bad boy.
Red Storm can be used for nuclear simulations, and other big data crunching applications it appears.

In the article- "10,368 Opterons are linked in a three dimensional mesh using Hypertransport." I would love to see a diagram of that. Or at least have someone here with some knowledge of Supercomputer architecture explain it a bit? Nothing is true, everything is permitted. |

A 3-D mesh is exactly how it sounds - this isn't a very bizarre configuration. Picture a 2-D mesh:
(Where a '*' is a node, and a line is an interconnect) ... and then extend it to 3-dimensions:
(Sorry for the drawing! Sheesh, ASCII sucks!) So picture lots of blocks like that, end on end. . This itself would simply be an 8-node 3D mesh. I'd go on, but that's the basic idea, I'm sure you can extrapolate from there. (Why not just go with a flat network? Probably the 'hypertransport' based interconnect doesn't support it, and try finding a switch with the ports and bandwidth to handle 10368 CPUs!) |

Linux can scale to that magnitude? I'm impressed! My configuration: Many hopelessly outdated SMP boxen. Any system which is shipping is already obsolete! |

I see what you mean. With a 2d mesh, at 3 (?) hypertransport connects per chip, it could be tough to pull off. Plus, even if you could do it 2d, wouldn't there be more distance (or nodes) between the 2 farthest cpus than with a 3d design? Bad for latency. Nothing is true, everything is permitted. |

Ummm.... doesn this thing get a good Energuide rating for power efficiency? Can you cook your lunch on the heatsinks? LOL Has a big geek-cool factor though. Everything from an old P90 to dual AMD XP2000 and Sempron 2400. Run an HTPC in the living room. Laptop, wireless networking all over the place at home & work.... blah blah blah |
