It wasn't long ago that Dell shocked the PC industry with the announcement of selling AMD based Desktops and Servers. Earlier in the year, Sun , challenged Dell to a duel. In which, Dell decline. Without the right ammo to go to war, the company kept a quiet profile.
Fast forward to October 23rd, 2006 and the Texas based company is now offering two types of products based on the Opteron. A PowerEdge 6950 featuring Opteron featuring the 8xxx series Opteron processor. The other product launched is the SC1435. A Dual Processor Opteron featuring the 2xxx series product.
Back in August of this summer. Dell & Intel introduced The Xeon 7000 series based on Intel's Xeon code named: Tulsa. Ironically, Dell states that the new PowerEdge 6950 outperforms and consumes up to 20% less power than the PowerEdge 6850 server. (The 6850 was only launched in August of this year)
While Dell was hard at work building up their selection of AMD Opteron servers. HP silently moved to the top of the ranks as the #1 PC company in system shipments.

"We feel real comfortable with our position in that part of the market," Parker said. "The competitiveness of the Intel-based products is excellent now." |

![]() I want to see pictures of the innards and benchmarks of the PowerEdge 6950. Perhaps the PowerEdge 6950 vs a similarily configured woodcrest system from say IBM or the likes not to fuel flamewars but to see which platform really is best in the server market and if HT has kept AMD #1 in the > 2 socket setup. ![]() Curiously, the sweet spot, which is the 2RU Dual Core Dual processor still hasn't AMD processors. This isn't certainly innocent. |

The price is lower, because it becomes an alternative product. It is no longer a Flagship product that warrants a higher price as it did last week. The Opteron based model is now the flagship. The price would be reduced to move inventory. The 6950 warrants it's price as it replaces the 6850 which was, according to Dell, a less of a performer in comparison to the 6950. But, of course, you read the article. So, you would've seen that mentioned. |FAQ's|Heatware-Remedy{WcS}|Dual760|Beerology| |

![]() I am curious where the actually benchmarks are here to proved the claim. I did find one article that mention Spec benchmarks, but I search www.spec.org and could not find the benchmark. I personally take anything I read on the internet with grain of salt. I was just pointing out the link on Dell's so people can actually see the actual website instead of just reading peoples opinions.
