Digit-Life Fondles Intel's Tualatin!
Posted by: Jim on: 02/10/2002 10:12 PM [ Print | 8 comment(s) ]
I'm about to post news. No, really. I am. Digit Life ran Intel's Tualatin-S through hoops in order to test it's mettle.
Today there are 4 main chipsets supporting P-III Tualatin in dual-processor configurations: VIA Apollo Pro133T/266T and ServerWorks ServerSet III LE3/HE-SL. All of them are modified versions of the previous models which worked with processors meant for Socket 370. The chipsets' features are compared in the table, and I'm going to underline only the most considerable differences...He does a lot of talking, and he even has some pictures and discussion surrounding gorgeous boards like Tyan's Thunder HEsl-T (which you should send me Tyan. I only dream about the board), and others. Read about it, if you're so inclined.

The article states the Server Tualatin will scale to 1.4 GHz. I've been told by a guy who's very close to Intel that the silicon is capable of scaling to 1.7 GHz and there might be some surprises down the road for us with regards to the Server Tualatin. That is fine and dandy about it scaling that high, but at what cost? 500 dollars? 600 dollars? I can only imagine how much it will cost in Canadian dollars. |FAQ's|Heatware-Remedy{WcS}|Dual760|Beerology| |

Besides, remember Intel isn't overly concerned about the retail market. A better question would be how much would it cost to upgrade to these processors in your fancy Dell PowerEdge, Compaq Proliant, et al. Hmm... I am fortunate enough to know a couple of the folks who are processor applications engineers at Intel, and unless they're being left out of the loop the word is that Tualatin will end at 1.53GHz. Shame though, as I am a fan of Tualatin. |

Speaking of Compaq, I'm getting sick of their price gouging. $440 to put in a second coppermine 933mhz cpu into a DL380? That's highway robbery! If you toss in your own ($110 street), bye bye warranty, faster than you can say "bend over". I can undertand a little bit of a price increase, but c'mon, FOUR TIMES?!? Ryan |
