Dropping the Hammer

Posted by: HEMI on: 04/23/2003 01:22 AM [ Print | 20 comment(s) ]

Most people won't get to see/play with an x86-64-based machine for a while, but lots of hardware sites already have a Hammer or two in their hands. If you want to see how a Hammer works hit up these reviews/previews:
  • Ace's Hardware

  • AMDZone

  • C|Net (a collection of articles)

  • Tom's Hardware Guide

  • X-bit Labs

Gotta dig that crazy alphabetical order organizational method. :) I need to start "AardvarkHardware" so I can be first...

I had no problems getting to the THG review.

Unix is user-friendly; it's just picky about its friends.

I think THG just blocked referrals from /. or something.

He also appears to have broken NDA by quite a few hours this morning. I saw his review around 5 am CST when I first got up.

I read the THG review at 1230 am MST. Poorly done I thought. The Ace's review is better written and better informed.

I liked Aces best also. Their articles are always extremely clear and well written while covering their material in more depth than most.

As most of their other reviews. Actually, no, fish sticks you can eat. BTW, who else thinks the "Athlon 64" in the Xbit review is actually just a repackaged Opteron?

Ace's are usually the best, closely followed by Anand's (yes, loads of fluff and loads of ads, but at least he usually gets the facts straight and knows what he's doing).

I also like Tech Reports board/CPU reviews. I wonder if they will get one in to review?

I don't want to shame them too much, but the folks over at amdzone seem to have a few problems interpreting their POVray benchmarking results - and deciding if a higher or lower figure is better... hehe

The rest of them are wasting valible internet bandwidth with their crap. We'd be better off if they served beastiality and scat movies.

Pretty sad :(

I used to really like Xbit, now even their news reports are editorials! A don't want some one-sided news report, I just want the news!

Ha! Agreed! With all those ads, Tom's Hardware might as well be Tom's Pornware. All they need is Java-based pop-ups to complete the site.

Tom's is still bloated even if you block their ad servers that send you the banner ads, disable graphics, and turn off Java script.

Xbit is still slow even when I disable the picts and graphics. (I read it for the news mainly...Unless an Interesting article pops into the scene.)

Little OT :
How come 2cpu.com forums and Ace's Hardware reviews loads quite quickly? Is it the way the software is optimised? You guys did custom tweaks?
(Because even with ads and picts, its still reasonably fast.)

I go on Aussie sites like overclockers.com.au and their forums chug a bit. (This is my Cable that is speed capped to 3KB/s, since I plowed over the 3GB monthly limit. :( )

Anandtech has an excellent multi-part series covering the Opteron. Only two parts are up as I type, the first is on the architechture and the second has SMP benches. Surely more will come in the following days -- an excellent read.

This statement is false.

Wonderboy has made his site virtually unreadable with all the ad content. That and he is spinning his Opteron coverage over 2 days and 4 articles to maximise the page views. .. makes for a hard read. :(

the toms hardware review was just complete crap. he referred to a dual xeon board as a granite bay board, they used sisoft sandra!!!! and I'm sure there was one other **** up.

I quite like anand's approach, I think it will give us all much more information overall than just one article.

Microsoft, of all entities, also benchmarked some Opterons for us, with (edit: Exchange) no less, in two and four-way configurations:

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/planning/2000/perfscal.asp

Needless to say, Opterons come on on top of Xeons in each of 2P and 4P categories. By the way, read over the configurations of those Opteron systems, they're simply mind-boggling!
