Dual Core K8s a-coming!

Posted by: Forge on: 06/15/2004 01:32 AM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ]

Hooz just pointed out this article to me. Looks like it's time for Intel to get cracking, if the Empire is going to Strike Back. The dual core K8s aren't coming out tomorrow, but the K8 was designed with multicore application in mind, so I'd imagine it'll take off with a bang when it hits. Now if Intel has some multicore Merom action planned for 2005, we could see some real excitement in the tech sector!

On a dual core processor does that mean that AMD will use an independent memory controller on each core or will each core share a memory controller??? Also does anyone know how many HT links each dual core processor is likely to have??
When this happens its going to be fantastic. Didn't AMD already promise that these puppies will be socket compatible with existing motherboards. My 246's will be going dual core :D

Both cores will share a single memory controller, last I heard. HT links would be the same as now, since the cores would cross-communicate through the same linkage that they use to talk to the memory controller.

This is all based off what I recall from some pseudo-announcements posted about a month or two back.

Anandtech hinted that in order to remain pin compatable, they would have to share the memory controller or run out of pins in a hurry.

I pray that the current motherboards will support this feature when it comes out. I need to upgrade my 4 year old machine and that date is rapidly approaching. Dual AMD64 is looking sweeter and sweeter. If only they had some sort of hyperthreading too, 4 CPU's in one would be killer!

A bit off topic, anyone know of the g5's being multi-cored in the future?

well, the current 970fx is due to scale to 2.6GHz and is a derivative of IBM's big tin Power 4 processor. I remember reading at chipgeek at while back that the PPC980 starts scaling from 3GHz and supports the SMT and multiple cores features of its parent; the Power 5. Its likely that the 3GHz G5 will be a PPC980 (based off the Power 5) and still retain the 'G5 moniker' (remember there were different versions of the G4 (7400, 7450, etc....)..
Apple and IBM are notoriously extremely tight lipped about processor roadmaps. To be honest most information floating about on the net is rumor based... whether there is any truth or not to it I'm not sure. There could very well be...... where there is smoke there is fire. What is known for certain is that the PPC980 is a derivative of the Power 5 and , SMT and rumored to support dual cores.

Well, for those that favour the "Empire"...Here is Intel's plans....

=> http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=912&s=1

They will also bring dual-core to the Xeon family.

In addition, this ( http://www.digit-life.com/news.html?105901#105901 ) says that LGA775 is designed for dual-core.

So its a match up of the dual-cores in 2005...

P4EE (LGA775) and Athlon64 FX
Xeon and Opteron

Obviously, AMD is benefiting from the fact that they designed their CPU with dual-core in mind. (which could mean it'll perform a little better.)

Sempron (Socket 754): 2x Abit NF8-V (nForce3 250Gb) and ASRock K8SLI-eSATA2 (ULi M1697) Dual CPU love: Supermicro P6DBE (i440BX), PIIIDRE (i840), 2x PIIIDR3 (i840), 4x ASUS P3C-D (i820), and ACorp 6A815EPD1 (i815EP) OSs?: Linux, Solaris and BSDs.
