We don't post a whole lot of videocard news around here, but considering all the hype about Nvidia's NV30, I figured that you might be interested in these preliminary benchmarks over at MaximumPC. ATI has been ruling the roost with their Radeon 9700 Pro, but can they hold out?
The practical upshot is that if next year

uughh, Reeks like a Fishmonger!

Now I know what a hardware review would look like published in Pravda under Stalin :D ... Of course this could be on par with ATI's "Quack3" stunt....

It's nice Hype and theres really no info to go on. Why nVidia would allow them to publish this way, it sounds more dubious than it does an good. It sounds awfully fishy to me with statements like...

nVidia initially refused to let us benchmark it at all, and relented only when we agreed to limit our tests to pre-approved benchmarks running at stipulated resolutions and AA settings
and

Our hunch is that turning on 4x anti-aliasing at 1600x1200 would diminish the GeForce

Does anyone else think the fact that the NV30 is going to take up an AGP slot AND a pci slot a little strange?

Supposedly only the high-end card will. The budget card is supposed to have a more compact fan that doesn't do that.

Not at all. if you look at many cards by 3DLabs they have for a long time required a slot or 2 vaccant.

Yeah it's just the ultra or whatever it will be called.

My feeling is it's kind of like overcloking a CPU, you gotta have a monster heatsink in order to push the CPU.. So I guess it could be said that if the core is getting pushed to the point that it needs super mondo cooling.... there may be a problem with the cores performance...

When you look at the transistor count of a cpu, and gpu, then compare the size of heatsinks. You have to agree that GPU design is very heat efficent... Nvidia is pushing up agianst some limitations with this design, and needs a larger heat sink...

Not a big deal, I think...

If CPU's had that transistor count...they surely wouldn't be able to run at 2GHz... so how heat efficient is the GPU anyway? I don't think very efficient.
