Gnome to be (possibly) dropped by Slackware
Posted by: Jim_ on: 10/11/2004 06:00 PM [ Print | 6 comment(s) ]
OSNews is reporting that Slackware may be considering dropping Gnome due to bugs and maintenance problems.
"Anyway, suffice to say the jury is still out. Since GNOME 1.4 I've felt that GNOME is going in a direction that doesn't fit well with Slackware's goals, and for at least as long I've considered removing it completely and taking whatever flames I get for that decision."You can read the rest and a plethora of comments from Linux users over at OSNews.

I disagree. I love gnome for its simplicity. To me KDE has become the explorer of the Linux/*BSD world. I don't use slackware, so I guess this doesn't matter. Although, you could just install from scratch gnome if you really wanted it. 121 total Ghz, 304GB in total memory... People use GNOME? I've tried KDE off and on over the years. I haven't been that thrilled with it. I've used WindowMaker for quite a while now and I don't hate it. Unix is user-friendly; it's just picky about its friends. |

It's probably a move based around supporting configurations. I doubt it's cakewalk to have to add support for both on the cd. Has anyone noticed that sometimes when you start a program in KDE, it takes anywhere from 8 - 10 seconds for it to show up on the screen? It happens even with something as simple as KWrite. I will open and close it numerous times, each time loading instantly. And then one time I'll run it and I'll just be sitting there for what seems like forever, and then it finally pops up on the screen. Why is KDE so slow? |

What version of KDE are you using, as of right now 3.3.1 is available. http://kde.org/announcements/changelogs/changelog3_3to3_3_1.php Also what kernel are you using, and how many processes are you running? If your really want a fast kernel, then you need to consider the tweaks available by different kernel maintainers and follow the low latency patches available. Also were you using, or accessing the hard drive at the time you were opening your application? I think KDE is picking up steam, with a solid foundation I have not heard that much about Gnome 2.8 lately. If slackware drops it, then most likely the package maintainers are tired of supporting it. In Debian packages are orphaned all the time the maintainers just get tired and move to something else. Regardless you could still compile the program from source, its not like Slackware users are not able to use make. Gnu_Raiz Use it, promote it, live it! Open Software!
