Hercules Prophet MX Review!

We've all heard about nVidia's latest creation, the Geforce 2 MX. Aimed for the "budget market", it is supposed to holster the power of a Geforce 256 but have loads of new, swanky features. FiringSquad got their hands on Hercules Geforce 2 MX board, the Prophet MX. It's pretty... a wonderful Blue PCB definitely gives it an interesting look.
The GeForce 2 MX is built on a 0.18-micron process, which reduces the power requirements of the chip. Couple the reduced power with a slightly slower 175MHz core clock speed, and you can see why the MX does not even require a heatsink, let alone a fan to cool it. Hercules apparently thought better of this and added a small heatsink anyway.It's cheap, it performs well, and has a nice feature set. Will it perform with a Geforce 2 GTS or a Voodoo 5? A resounding no. However, if you're looking for a cheap upgrade from a previous generation of video card, this could be a viable option. Check it out for yourself over here.

The Register has posted a review of IBM's Thinkpad T42p. The T42p sports ATI's Mobility Fire GL T2 workstation graphics chip. What sets a workstation chip apart from standard graphics chips is its certification for use with certain high-end graphical design packages. So if you want a notebook to run a CAD package, or a 3D rendering application, you'll want one that has a graphics chip approved by the software vendor. That way, when you run a preview of that complicated scene that you've been working on for days, you know it will work.This really does look like a mobile workstation. You might want to take a look. |

The guys over at SFFTech have posted a review of Iwill's ZMAXdp SFF. If I'm not mistaken, Hooz is running one of these units in the secret 2CPU.com underground test bunker.
