Holy Shnikes! A News Update!

*insert Keanu-like 'woah' here*
Yes, this is a news update. For those of you who just experienced the warm, fuzzy feeling that is a coronary... my bad.
Mikey talks turkey about Intel and boxed server products. Intel might not be pleased with the incursions AMD and VIA have made into the Shakari that is the server market. (a mention on the front page to the one who can nail down where the 'Shakari' reference is from) Intel may just want to keep those high margins to themselves.
I'm tired as I just finished a string of 12 hour night shifts, so I'll let Mikey tell it:
UPDATE: Wowzers is our winner. He keenly remembered the mention of 'Shakari' from 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier'. Congratulations.

It's with some interest then, that we see Intel offering a boxed front end DP server roadmap to its distributors and system integrators during this quarter and Q1/Q2 of next year.Say nothing, just make with the reading and stuff. I'm going to bed or something. Wooo.
The 2U, volume 1U and Value 1U boxed server Intel is offering in Q4 and early Q1 next year are Pentium III-S chips at 1.26GHz, 1.40GHz and using the ServerWorks LE 3 (Broadcom - cough) or Micron Copperhead chipsets.

We did have a good reason for not posting news. I mean, CGI was broken on the server and our news script is a CGI script, so... Jim and MalHavoc save the day again! Isn't the 'Shakari' reference from Startrek V: The Final Frontier (a semi-finalist in the Worst-ever category of Startrek movies. It finished just a hair's breath above The Motion Picture.) I think I only saw it once, but that word seems to ring bells. Is it the Red wire or the Yellow?? Your case-mod will self destruct in 5 seconds! |

Heh. Way to rationalize it! You and I both know no one even tried to post news. Surely if that was the case someone would have been kind enough to tell me cgi was busted. :-) No harm no foul. A fresh compile of apache should hopefully speed things up when I get around to it tomorrow. I'm tired. :-( 2CPU.com - Because two are always better than one! Those codename articles are so ridiciously hard to read. Anyway, since it didn't mention it, I thought I'd point everyone out to the motherboard side of Intel's plans (an already released MB): http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?threadid=10990 - uses the Intel SCB2 which also appears to be available boxed. I really like the idea of 2 PCI slots in a 1U and up to 6 in a 2U. You could make a server with incredibly fast disk I/O in a 4U space (seperate 2U or 3U hotswap drive case). And a 2U server would have enough space to make almost everything redundant (RAID controllers, gigabit ethernet, PSU, cooling, boot drives, etc.). The boards are starting to show up on PriceWatch, but this is the first whole system, I think. Looks absolutely scrumptious. Probably a good price, at least compared to what's on PriceWatch so far. |
