Intel's Dual-Core Servers Prepare for Their Close-Up

eWeek has an article posted regarding Intel's entry into the dual-core server arena. July is the month!
Later this month, the chip maker will begin rolling out the first of four new dual-core server platforms for machines ranging from inexpensive, single-processor boxes for small businesses to multiprocessor Xeon servers and high-end Itanium machines for large businesses. Based on its new chips' capabilities, Intel expects to see a relatively quick transition from single-core processors to dual-core processors in servers using its chips. You can read the entire article over here. I love the fact that Intel is taking a step backwards. AMD really has them on their heels in the Server market. They are releasing the Pentium D and Pentium D-EE processors for single CPU servers and blades. When was the last time Intel marketed a "Pentium" class chip in the server environment? Pentium-Pro? And who in their right mind would use these hot plates in their blades? Opteron Dual-Core CPUs actually use less power and run cooler than their former single core predecessors. I think the target Intel is trying to aim for is market share. AMD has just about 99% of the X86-64-bit Dual-core server market. Intel wants some of that too. Only having 1% can be very frustrating... |FAQ's|Heatware-Remedy{WcS}|Dual760|Beerology| |

Intel E-7210 Server Pentium 4 Chipset I have a IBM eServer x220 with a pair of Pentium III processors in it sitting right next to my workstation. At work we have a Dell PowerEdge with a single Pentium 4 in it (I forget the model number...700 something I think?...it is 6 months or so old and not their SC model but the bottom of their regular non-SC PowerEdge line). Honestly, when have Pentium branded processors not been marketed towards the very low-end server market since the introduction of the Pentium Pro? I guess i just do not see why having a "Pentium Inside" sticker instead of a "Xeon Inside" sticker on a low-end server. ->Computers ->Folding for team 3074 |
