C|Net is reporting that Intel will bring its dual-core Xeon to market in 2006.
Specifically, Intel will release a dual-core, dual-processor model in the first quarter of 2006, said Richard Dracott, general manager of marketing and planning for Intel's enterprise platforms group. Later that year, Intel will release another model with power-saving features geared for the confined quarters of thin rack-mounted servers and thinner blade servers, he said.AMD is planning on bringing a dual-core Opteron to market somewhere in the middle of 2005, as per the article.

![]() ... so intel added 64 bitness to the xeons first, but the xeons will see dual cores last? |

![]() Most probably an FSB loading issue with the first round of dual core chips. These are just 2 single cores therefore 2 fsb interfaces in a single package. So a dual - dual core system would have four processors on the FSB. This would cause severe problems trying to reach higher FSB speeds due to the extra electrical loads. You would be limited to the current 400MHz bus used for Xeon MP systems, without the extra cache the Xeon MP's give to overcome the FSB contention issues. This would negate the advantage of the extra cores. Later dual core systems will have extra bus arbitration logic and so will appear to the bus as a single CPU. Also by then the northbridge (I can't remember the codename off the top of my head) will support independant FSB's ala Athlon MP. I think AMD has really caught Intel on the hop this time, with 64bit and a properly designed multi-core roadmap, not just a me-too hack. However, knowing AMD, they're bound to screw it up just when intel get their act together (~2H06 looking at current roadmaps). If it ain't broke......you ain't played with it enough.
