Intel Scraps Once-Crucial Itanium Feature

Circuitry to let Itanium run software for x86 chips, such as Pentium and Xeon chips, is not present in the forthcoming "Montecito" processor, according to the 176-page reference manual for the chip published this week.

![]() As I posted in another forum. This "feature" hasn't been crucial for a VERY long time. The 486 on core was used briefly in the original Itaniums, but emulation has been the norm for some time. ![]() I believe Duraid mentioned a number of times here that in his opinion, software emulation on the Itanium was much faster running the x86 'in hardware' on the Itanium. Not a big loss, and not a surprise either. The saved die space can be used to further enhance the architecture to the point that the software emulation of x86 will improve again... so it looks to be a win win.... apart from the fact that they aren't selling particularly well and are long overdue ![]() Hung like a donkey. Go like a horse! |
