Intel Skeptic About AMD’s Plans to Release CPU with Three Cores

The core wars are coming, again. This time around AMD is in position of not a Dual attack, but Triple. Last month, AMD announced Phenom X3. A processor with three cores and 2MB L3 cache for the consumer. However, Intel's CTO, Justin Rattner begs to differ;
Anton Shilov of Xbitlabs has the scoop here.
| “So, yes, AMD has a four-core product. I’m sure when they looked at their yield losses, they said, ‘Wow, we can offer a three-core version of this if one of those cores are dead or slow or whatever it turns out to be’,” said Mr. Rattner. |

triple core gaming rigs are perfect for the multiplatform ( Xbox360/PC ) games that are being released right now. Intel has no answer as they have dual dualcore on 2 separate dies. A triplecore barcelon would gamingwise be maximum back-for-the-buck. No way AMD can go wrong there, its Intel that per usual isn't being innovative enough. But then again; they're not the ones in the corner. Of course Intel is mad because of NIH syndrome. They've probably been tossing all of their quads that didn't make the cut instead of using them as an alternative revenue source. |

It does sound like Intel is just trying to downplay AMD. So what if it's a clever way to increase yields? Smart move by AMD, I'd say. Besides, it's not like Intel doesn't have their own tricks to increase yields. And I guess to down play a third core makes sense for Intel, since they can't easily put together a three-core product themselves (if I understand the architecture correctly), to compete for whatever market space this X3 cpu might have. The computer gods decided my signature was to long... so they reset it. |
