Intel to push a new product number scheme?

The Inquirer has linked to an article over at the french site x86-secret.com regarding a new Intel product numbering scheme?
The 3000, 5000, 7000, 9000 series will denote the Xeon UP, DP, MP and Itanium respectively. According to the reliable source, the forthcoming Itanium Montecino core will feature dynamic overclocking as well as a 24MB level 3 cache.

no... working in tripple figures didn't have the scope required for the amount of different product relaunches they required.

I've heard that even Intel's engineers have no idea what some of the codenames refer to. It seems that when the marketing department is out of ideas, they just throw out a new codename and let people speculate about what it might be.

What was wrong with continuing on with the ghz method or just adopting something like what amd did? Ok folks it runs at 2.6 ghz but it's as fast as the other guys 4.0ghz processors so we call this one the AMD64 4000+.
So intel says, ok folks it runs at 4.0ghz but it's supposed to be as fast as the other guy's 2.6ghz processor so we carry four zero's and... wait what were we doing again? Oh hell let's call it the 690. And what does 690 stand for Bob? No idea... but it sounds good. :rolleyes:

Well their 4 digit scheme is one more digit than AMD's, so it's bound to increase sales.
