Intel's New Itanium Plans
Posted by: Hooz on: 01/17/2003 12:59 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]
Although it has scored a few major OEM wins (Dell), Intel's Itanium 2 has met with a fairly "Ho-hum" market. Whatever is a processor company to do? How about accelerating your release schedule for new and improved processors? Sounds like a plan, and that is exactly what is happening according to this News.com post.
The changes reflect Intel's confidence in its ability to release high-end server chips faster than competitors and thereby gain the performance high ground, said Jonathan Eunice, principal analyst at Illuminata. There is even some talk about a "dual core" Itanium and some 9mb cache monsters in there. Good stuff.
Itanium 2 ranks with the best server chips in the market, but the new release schedule will likely enhance the chip's attractiveness and put pressure on competitors to step up their own schedules, something that they have been loath to do.
