Internet Explorer 7.0 (beta) Review

Posted by: admin on: 02/01/2006 03:42 PM [ Print | 13 comment(s) ]

The beta version of IE7 released today by Microsoft is meant for developers and tech enthusiasts. In IE7, you'll find multiple-page views, tabbed browsing, an integrated RSS reader, and improved security. However, there are some bugs and instabilities, and it's not as compact as its competitors.

Read the full review of the beta.

Which is kind of what Firefox did with Opera anyway. ;)

and of course, IE7 wont install on server 2003. awesome.

Haven't seen Opera crash in about 3 months, and I have running at least 8 hours a day. When it does crash (usually caused by some plug-in), it will remember which pages you were browsing, any e-mails you may have been editing, etc. The only thing it doesn't remember (unfortunately) is the contents of forms that you had open, but that might be due to security issues.

I've been using IE7 ever since they posted it up on my MSDN downloads page. It's been working great. The only thing that I do not like is that it uses much more memory than IE6 and has some problems with some web pages. HP's website shows everything in very very small print (even if you hold control and scroll the font to max) and Belkin configuration pages won't open up at all. You just can't get into belkin routers with IE7.

I agree

I don't believe that at all. It's gotta be a Hardware issue :p

At the same time you guys can't say firefox doesn't eat up memory. I have 4 tabs open and have been using this window for about 3 hours and its taking up 90mb. I've seen it hit 200  FF pre-loads pages. Turn it off if you don't want it taking up too much ram. I'm assuming IE7 does the same thing.

What use is empty RAM? If an application can benefit from using more RAM, I expect it to do so. As long as it releases non-essential memory when the system starts to run out, of course.

With Respect to Opera; I have been using it for 6 months now and yes it's true it has crashed from time to time. Never the less, it has been the best of the best browser mail client I have ever used. I wanted IE5 & 6 to be the best, but it simply hadn't happened. IE7 won't dim my expectations... I don't have any.

Ashes to ashes, Apples to Windows.

I'm also a proponent for using the RAM available once it is released when needed. In this day and age of dual core, 2GHz plus monsters and 1 gig of ram standard on lots of machines, I think its crazy that we do not attempt to utilize such hardware available. This should not be at the expense of inefficient and sloppy code, but for the purpose of providing more functionality, better UI etc.. in short a superior user experience.
