Iomega Rolls Out 120GB Backup Drive

Many of you here from the mid-90's computer era remember a company named Iomega and a product named Zip. Well, A lot has changed since that era and the company has changed its direction to a new target market. The storage maker is aiming at the SMB market where products like Tape back-up are not always the most feasible choice and RAID arrays may not be choice due to management and cost. Iomega came up with a better solution called the REV drive. It started out as a 35GB capacity and then 70GB and then quickly ramped up 120GB today. The drive is and will be available in variety of flavors of connectivity (SATA, PATA, 1394, USB).

At that price you could have 2 external 'one touch' drives with at least 3x the capacity. One to keep on-site one for offsite, and easy enough to use even your average business user can operate it. heatware >> SM X7DWA-N, 2xE5462, 16GB/1600mhz FB-DIMM, 2x500GB ES.2, 2x 1TB & 1x 2TB WD Caviar Black, PC P&C PSU, Evga GTX285 SC, Lian Li PC-G70 (modified), RME Hdsp Multiface (pro audio) >> 2008 2.8GHz Mac Pro w/ 16GB ram & 2007 17" Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz, 6GB ram >> 3.2Ghz Phenom II 955, 785G based AMD boxes w/ 8GB Ram & 2x 1TB Drives >> older: SM P4DC6+ (w/ 2x2.4Ghz, 1GB RDRam, Quadro FX4000, & 2xScope dsp cards), 1x SM P6DBS, 1x Super S2DGU, 2x Asus P2B-DS & 1x SM P6DNH w/ ppro 166's |

The reliability factors between Tape, REV and SATA 7200RPM drives are just too vast to even compare anymore. SATA Drives have higher failure rates than Tape media and REV media (which is similar to a disk drive @ 4200RPM). |FAQ's|Heatware-Remedy{WcS}|Dual760|Beerology

I'm used to Iomega targeting 'joe consumer' class business people more than technically inclined IT staff. heatware >> SM X7DWA-N, 2xE5462, 16GB/1600mhz FB-DIMM, 2x500GB ES.2, 2x 1TB & 1x 2TB WD Caviar Black, PC P&C PSU, Evga GTX285 SC, Lian Li PC-G70 (modified), RME Hdsp Multiface (pro audio) >> 2008 2.8GHz Mac Pro w/ 16GB ram & 2007 17" Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz, 6GB ram >> 3.2Ghz Phenom II 955, 785G based AMD boxes w/ 8GB Ram & 2x 1TB Drives >> older: SM P4DC6+ (w/ 2x2.4Ghz, 1GB RDRam, Quadro FX4000, & 2xScope dsp cards), 1x SM P6DBS, 1x Super S2DGU, 2x Asus P2B-DS & 1x SM P6DNH w/ ppro 166's |

All these physical formats are dangerous as long-term back-ups. I certainly can no longer read the zip disks I made 10 years ago. What is really needed is an absolutely trusted on-line repository. |

I skimmed the article pretty quickly, so I may have missed it.. but were there any details about what kind of device this actually is? With no details, and a comparison to existing backup technologies, it sounds like something of their own design. Unfortunately, something of IOmega's own design makes me think of a) Zip drives and b) the click of death (that's what it was called, right?) Maybe I'm being judgmental, though; the failure of a Zip disk was my first real-world example of the importance of backups. #/> Pomp |

But, it is made from a pseudo hard disk. It's a removable format and it's been successful for a few years now because of performance, cost and warranty. IIRC, the warranty on the media is 5 years. |FAQ's|Heatware-Remedy{WcS}|Dual760|Beerology
