Linux 2.4 delays

Ugg, if you're a Linux user, you no doubt follow kernel development. The moment I hear about a new stable kernel release, I generally download and compile it. Well, we've been waiting on 2.4 for awhile now. It will bring an aweful lot to the table as far as features go. However, over at Zdnet they are telling us we may have to wait until October to benefit from it. From the man himself (Linus Torvalds)...
"We didn't much have a timetable for 2.4 originally, except that everyone knew that the two and a half years between 2.0 and 2.2 was too painful," Torvalds said. "The original hope was to have a release schedule between nine and 12 months, which everybody thought was wonderful, but at the same time a lot of people wondered about how it would work with a minimum three-month testing cycle. Right now it's been about 15 months since 2.2, and it's almost certainly going to be at least three more months..."Well, it'll be released eventually, and I'll be all over it baby! The Register has posted a review of IBM's Thinkpad T42p. The T42p sports ATI's Mobility Fire GL T2 workstation graphics chip. What sets a workstation chip apart from standard graphics chips is its certification for use with certain high-end graphical design packages. So if you want a notebook to run a CAD package, or a 3D rendering application, you'll want one that has a graphics chip approved by the software vendor. That way, when you run a preview of that complicated scene that you've been working on for days, you know it will work.This really does look like a mobile workstation. You might want to take a look. |

The guys over at SFFTech have posted a review of Iwill's ZMAXdp SFF. If I'm not mistaken, Hooz is running one of these units in the secret 2CPU.com underground test bunker.
