Mac Pro + Clovertown = Anandtech

I don't know how he does it, but Anand has gotten his hands on a pair of Clovertown CPUs (Core 2 Quad) and a Mac Pro desktop. As you can imagine, insane amounts of geeky goodness ensued.
The focus of the article is actually the new Mac Pro, but I skipped all that and went straight for the quad-core stuff first. Now I guess I should read the other 14 pages, huh?
| Later this year Intel will be introducing pin compatible upgrades to its Core 2 and Xeon lines, except instead of two cores these processors will feature four. Codenamed Kenstfield (Core 2) and Clovertown (Xeon), Intel's new quad-core processors will dramatically increase the amount of processing power you can have in a single system. Given that the Mac Pro features two LGA-771 sockets, you could theoretically drop two Clovertown processors in there and you'd have an 8-core Mac Pro. |

clovertown looks like it will be a great and easy upgrade for current macpro users because it will just drop in to the current sockets. 121 total Ghz, 304GB in total memory... For years I had 3 reasons why I wouldn't buy a MAC: my primary application only runs on DOS/Windows (3DS MAX), I could build my machines cheaper than any MAC or many PCs of the time, and (emotionally, not intellectuality) I wanted to prove to the #$!@ing MACheads that I could do anything they could do faster and cheaper (and usually at equal to better quality). Now I find myself maturing (only a little) and wishing that MAX ran native under a OSX, not requiring flipping to re-start. I'd likely switch over if two options existed: Autodesk made MAX for MACs (sounds funny), and that I could still use my PC renderfarm to do all my final 2D and 3D rendering without having to replace all my machines. The MAC Pro looks wonderful (though I'll bet I can build a PC version cheaper) and should be a complete success. I'm happy Apple has returned from the brink and should give the PC world a real reason to switch. Curtis Sponsler Creative Director | President - AniMill Offices in Ocoee,FL & Burbank, CA |
