Posted by: duke on: 11/09/2004 02:58 PM [ Print | 11 comment(s) ]
The day has arrived! Mozilla Firefox 1.0 has been released. No more Release Candidates!
Of course, as you can imagine, Mozilla's website is dealing with a high volume of traffic related to the announcement, so you might want to grab the release via one of the following links: Zip Torrent, EXE Torrent, or their FTP Server.

My understanding was the two RC's were more of an after thought and were never really in the original time table. It was a smart move doing them, with regards to their marketting blitz, as it helped spread the news to potential users. I've been using Firefox (Firebird) since 0.4 and have been pleased with it all along. v1.0 is a huge milestone for the project and the features it brings to the table are far beyond those offered by IE6.x. I've "used" Firefox since .4, it's a very nice browser. Good to see them finally make it to 1.0 status. Me Webpage | If you always think like an expert, you'll always be a beginner. | "A handful of knowledgeable people is more effective than an army of fools" -Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed. |

I've used older versions of Firefox, but I always preferred Opera myself. Nevertheless I'm prepared to give it a try. It's got to be better than IE, either way. They need to figure out some way that will extend the compatibility life of extensions though. I was using the RC and all the extensions I used worked fine. Now with 1.0 release only 1 extension will work. |

I have been using Opera for sometime now on Windows XP and NT and on Mac's OSX. Opera is very stable and configurable. I especially like it's ability to start up with the same tabs that you last closed down with. Firefox does not offer this. Firefox's back function (back arrow or Alt-left arrow) is as slow as Internet Explorer's - I guess this is because it is actually refreshing the page from the internet. Opera's back function can be called by simply typing the letter 'z' is very quick - I guess that it is relying only on the browser's cache. Using Firefox for the last few days (and for a short time some months ago) I noticed that it grabs a fair amount of cpu even when minimised. Opera does not. However, Opera grabs a fair amount of memory even when minimised whereas Firefox will free some memory when it is minimised. Will give Firefox another week or so before I decide which to stay with. 694D PRO (MS-6321), dual Intel PIII 1GHz, 1GB SDRAM, nVidia GeForce2 GTS |

I like the layout of Firefox. However, I've found it's REALLY slow compared to IE. No idea why this is, I'd gladly ditch IE if only Firefox were faster. It also seems I'm the only one with this problem, even my roommate uses it and says its fine. Same goes for Opera and Mozilla, both painfully slow. I've yet to find a plugin for mouse gestures in Firefox that I'm comfortable with. Those I've tested either used gestures that were significantly diferent from what I'm used to, or is to unsensitive. Wawing the mouse all over the mouse pad is not my idea of "quick and easy". If you can lie on the floor without holding on, then you're not drunk enough. |
