MSI K7D Master-L Review @ ViperLair.com!

Posted by: Jim on: 07/15/2002 03:50 PM [ Print | 9 comment(s) ]

In a mad search for news this morning I stumbled upon this link over at AMDMB.com. ViperLair.com has reviewed MSI's K7D Master-L.
While it doesn't manage to break any performance records, the K7D Master-L is still one of the best motherboards on the market and its rock-solid stability can't be matched. Having two processors provides obvious enhancements in everything from browsing the Internet to burning CD's. Despite the terrible onboard audio and having an awkward IDE connector layout, the K7D Master-L is a perfect motherboard.
I think he liked it. Hooz does have one of these in testing right now and once he gets back from his vacation, he'll post it up for all to see. Read their review in the interim.

Vanilla review.

Should have delved more into the violation of the safety zone around the CPUs. I've got AX-7s mounted and had to shave fins on CPU2 only to clear the caps.

Should have mentioned that 1.3 was almost a manditory upgrade. The mobo is shipping with 1.1.

Should have mentioned the D-Bracket sucks-up a PCI slot, and who needs more USB ports? It also has long cables that go in two directions draping across the mobo.

Should have mentioned the odd placement of the mobo CPU and PS fan power/sensor sockets. The PS fan sensor/socket should be located closer to the edge of the mobo. The CPU sensor/sockets could have been located closer to the CPU sockets for convenience.

Should have mentioned the empty PCI slot cut-out to the left of the AGP slot that is unusable (except maybe for a D-Bracket).

Should have mentioned the USB 2.0 card shipping (which can also suck-up a PCI slot). But who needs more USB ports? :D

Thanks Jim, but I think I'll wait for Hooz's opinion.

I may not agree with your opinion, but I will defend to the death your right to express it.

I said the same thing to myself when I noticed that statement. Ah well. We'll have Hooz's answer soon enough.

Nice board

It may be terrible, but by Doh!, it's good enough for me.

I guess as an old fart - I can't hear anything anyway?

I've played games, CD's - inc. classical, watched movies, no gripes here. It won't match the performance of my Bose 901's, but then I don't use my computer as a sound system.

Sound works, LAN works, USB 1.1 works, USB 2.0 works, it all works. Never had an easier board to set up.

No need to skip it across a pond or bounce it off of the wall

I thought it was an alright review.

Of course, the thing I love about 2cpu's reviews is that they are always thorough.

Yeh, my sound works fine aswell - no pops and all that. I disabled it in the end though to free up resources.

Black Jacque: Your D-LED takes up a PCI slot? Thats unfortunate, mine doesnt. Have you considered getting a better case? Also, a different 4 LEDS can be seen on the motherboard just by the port block. Since you will often have the case off when putting in new components anyway, you could just use these and forget the D-LED block.

fig,

I've decided not to use the D-LED. The cables are long and the USB cable drapes across the entire mobo.

Besides who needs more USB ports? There are two below the LAN port already, and I've taken more out the front of my case from the USB connector pins on the mobo.

On my Antec SX850, the mobo's AGP slot aligns so that there is an unused PCI cutout to the left of the AGP slot. There is no PCI slot on the mobo to the left of the ACP slot. I guess I could have placed the D-LED there.

Thanks for the feedback on my review guys. Unfortunately when you have thirty reviews lined up you can't dwelve into every single issue. I tried to cover all of the areas that mattered and did make mention the 1.3 BIOS improves performance. It hought I did a decent review. Thanks for the positive and negative feedback, it helps.
