New DP Intel Solutions from... Intel!
Posted by: Hooz on: 06/18/2002 08:05 PM [ Print | 7 comment(s) ]
It looks like the wacky people over at Intel have whipped-up a few new DP server/motherboard solutions for the "Intel Inside" crowd. They have new PIII-S stuff and new Xeon stuff, so whatever tickles your fancy, they've got you covered. I thought it was pretty ironic for them to be releasing new "Tualatin" boards, since they've said it will go the way of the Dodo soon, but hey, maybe it's just me. Here are all the important links:

What chipset does that SDS2 use? Looks like an HE-SL type of featurset, but dual channel PC133 ... I thought that the HE-SL didn't support that, only the vanilla HE ... Sweet boards though from Intel (finally). Once again we've saved civilization as we know it. And the good news is, they're not gonna prosecute! |

According to this page the SDS2 is using the HE-SL chipset. The HE chipset has a four-way PC133 memory controller whereas the HE-SL has a dual-channel PC133 memory controller. I get it now. For a little bit I almost thought that it was an E7500 hacked to work with a PIII and SDRAM (not that that would be a bad thing ...) Intel really is in bed with Serverworks, not that I can blame them. Once again we've saved civilization as we know it. And the good news is, they're not gonna prosecute! |

why would they?? These things are made to run scsi disk subsystem, not IDE... you dont need a very efficient IDE controller to run a CD-ROM, which is all these things are really designed to use the IDE controllers for |

I think part of the reason is that Intel doesn't really want to deal with the P3 chipsets anymore and just focus on the P4, P4 Xeon and Itanium chipsets (even so, HP and possibly other large OEMs will design their own chipset for the Itanium2).
