New NVIDIA Detonator Drivers for Windows 64-bit OSes

Posted by: Jim on: 02/23/2004 03:09 PM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ]

I noticed over at AMDZone that NVIDIA has released new drivers (Version: 53.04) for Windows XP 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 SP1 64-bit.
Supports all Intel IA-32e 64-bit extended technology enabled platforms, AMD Opteron

Well, this isn't surprising, as Intel is the more influential one.

Intel says "Drivers, IA-32e, NOW!"
Everyone else "Yep, right here."

AMD says "Drivers, AMD64, NOW!"
Everyone else "Yep, maybe later." (in Microsoft's case...ALOT later...ATI...Non-existant!). :)

I'm just waiting for the first person (2cpu forum-ner) who buys one or GamePC throwing up a review and doing some sort of comparison...It'll be interesting to see their perspective on it...

Sempron (Socket 754): 2x Abit NF8-V (nForce3 250Gb) and ASRock K8SLI-eSATA2 (ULi M1697) Dual CPU love: Supermicro P6DBE (i440BX), PIIIDRE (i840), 2x PIIIDR3 (i840), 4x ASUS P3C-D (i820), and ACorp 6A815EPD1 (i815EP) OSs?: Linux, Solaris and BSDs.

speaking of 2CPU.com forum members and 64-bit computing, guru has a great site www.planetAMD64.com he made for stuff like this. Nice site, and has a great driver database (actually, I don't have a 64 bit computer so I wouldn't know much about how great it is, but knowing guru... it must be good. :) ). guru isn't around here too much anymore... I guess he is tied up with the massive influx of users he's been having with the overclockers.com news post about his site and stuff.

Which... don't actually exist. nVidia must really want a license to make those P4 chipsets. :D

But, if I'm not mistaken, they did release AMD64 drivers almost immediately after the Opteron's release, so if there's one company that isn't playing Intel's good doggy, it's nVidia.

Now, Microsoft, I don't get it. They don't have anything to gain by delaying Windows XP64 until Intel have an Opteron clone. On the contrary; it would give them an advantage when negotiating with Intel.

Maybe Otellini has some embarrassing pictures of Steve Ballmer? No, wait, everyone has embarrassing pictures of Steve Ballmer, so that can't be it... :D

Well, I'd say that this officially marks the Wintel world in the lead in terms of 64bit computing. We now have TWO 64bit chips -- Opteron and Athlon64. And Intel 64bit is due in the coming months (next quarter). Not only that, but MS (in addition to having been in the 64bit OS game for years now) has a downloadable beta of its consumer 64bit OS. Aside from Linux (which, for right now, is still not for the mass public), that's the only one there is.

FreeBSD...

Unix is user-friendly; it's just picky about its friends.
