New Server Processors from Intel

Slight roadmap changes are the news from Intel in regards to their Xeon plans for the next few years as reported over at Xbit. Inteil will not be releasing 800Mhz-FSB Xeons the same time as their slated 800Mhz desktop processors, instead going with a 667 MHz Xeon along with continuing support for 533 and 400MHz FSB Xeons until the 0.09-micron CPUs appear. Intel also has interesting plans in store for dual-capable Xeonx in the near future:
Also there will be one more interesting Xeon CPU for dual-processor systems, which is due in Q3 2002. It will be Xeon 3.06GHz with 1MB L3 cache. This will be the only solution in the dual-processor Xeon family equipped with an L3 cache.Check out the article for more info.

I read this post earlier today on Xbit, and obviously they meant Q3 2003 (not Q3 2002) for the Xeon 3.06 1MB.. I would imagine the 1MB cache would increase the price of the CPU above $1600-1800 or so, compared to around $800-900 for the 512K model. Question is, would it be worth it to wait for the Xeon 3.06 1MB instead of the Xeon 3.06 512K? What kind of applications on a dual Xeon would see a benefit to the extra L3 cache? Edit: Sorry, confused 512K L2 cache with 1MB L3 cache, but the questions still stand. |

The good thing about the continued support for the 400MHz./533MHz. BUS would mean that the 2.8GHz XEONS/placer combination would be a pretty healthy upgrade path, for now; as planned obsolescence has been assigned a later date For most of us, the Xeon 512 should be more than what we really need; but, definitely an L3 cache could actually boost real life performance. Those hypsters are afraid of thier own numbers it seems. It is really is a 666 FSB but called 667 so damn politically correct it makes me sick |

The 1Mb L3 cache may well assist HT (HyperThreading), to help avoid decreases in performance when it is activated, as happens now under certain conditions. Re: 666 Vs 667 MHz nomenclature... Remember, it is all based on 33.33 recurring (100/3), so 666.66 recurring does actually round up to 667 with using whole numbers for the mass market. (Discussions regarding "the number of the beast", the Bible and Iron Maiden's classic song aside.) ;) Xeon - Experiment: 2x SL6EP 2.4/400@3450+|PC-DL 1.04-B05 BIOS1009|2Gb GeIL Ultra-X PC3200 2-2-2-5| Gigabyte 6600GT Fanless Heatpipes|silent Samsung HD's|Antec Titan550|stock voltages|IWT+Agilent cooler| AMD - Experiment: Opteron165 1.8@2.25 CCBWE 0551WPMW|stock heatpipe HSF|HP/nVidia QuadroFX4500| Antec TPII 550W|Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe|4Gb Corsair TwinX2048-4000PT|2x Dell 2405FPW's|more 2 come..| |

These are bad news for those who wanted to wait for 800mhz QPB Xeons. Instead the new roadmap remove all doubts about buying a couple of 2.8 right now (like I'm doing to). PS: About 1MB L3 versions it really depends on what kind of applications you run. For a workstation usage that should have less impact than pure mhz. I wonder to which frequencies 533-Xeons will arrive during this year ot at the beginning of next one... It would be kick ass to see the 1MB L3 soon, but what we have now will kick ass in most projects. Now we just need a affordable 4 way Non-Xeon MP lovin rasp |

Nice to see Intel arent deserting older fsbs too quickly. I wonder if many I860 boards will be able to provide the juice needed for 3.2gig though. The L3 version sounds very nice (400fsb variant would be nice too though - lower fsb would benefit more from it). Supposedly some placer boards have clock gens which can run 667fsb with pci in spec, details on the ICS one used in the Iwill are not available though.
