Pentium M Single Board Server?
Posted by: Jim_ on: 06/22/2004 05:31 PM [ Print | 9 comment(s) ]
Tom was kind enough to let me know about this interesting product from Momentum. How about a VMEbus single board computer based on a 1.1, 1.6 or 1.8GHz Pentium M processor with 2MB of L2 cache that's utilizing Intel's E7501 chipset? Sounds like an interesting animal doesn't it?
Two 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet ports are provided at front panel RJ45 connectors, along with USB, keyboard, mouse, serial and VGA graphics interfaces. Additionally, there are USB. serial, parallel, FDD, audio (speaker/mic) and IDE interfaces available via the VME P2 connector. It's not something I could really use, but it's neat nonetheless.

![]() This thing a SFF? No way, there are better solutions for that purpose (MicroATX/FlexATX to more modern standards like Mini/Pico-ITX). This thing needs 6U space. That's not as small as it seems. Ok, you can put it on its side but that does not change the fact that there are better (and cheaper) solutions for this. And these are already widespread. This type of equipment is the likes of Advantech and other manufacturers of industrial/embedded/single board PC's. Standards like PC104 and Mini-PCI are more common there. ![]() No this thing in it's current form isn't what you want if you're looking for a SFF computer, the VME chassis precludes it from that, however it's rack density is pretty good... how many of those buggers can you get in a VME chassis? 15? 16? 16 CPUs isn't bad in 6U. However, seeing a Pentium-M bolted up to a 7501 chipset does make you wonder if you couldn't have 2 Pentium-Ms on there... or for that matter in a laptop, (or the SFF board of your choice) The pathetic state of our government will never change unless we stop electing politicians and start electing public servants. Remember: There was once a time when the term "politician" had a very negative connotation. |

![]() I was referring to the idea of using the P-M outside the laptop market in an effort to reduce system size even further. I use a SFF as my LAN rig; the reason for me having a SFF + LCD is that I want something as close to a laptop but with upgradeable video and large storage. I have a P-M laptop with a FX5200 and it |
