Serverworks and Supermicro to Support AMD Opteron!

Posted by: Jim on: 04/10/2003 03:54 PM [ Print | 13 comment(s) ]

After quite a news drought we seemed to have hit the motherload this morning. Mikey over at The Inquirer is reporting that two ardent Intel-only supports have decided to jump on the Opteron bandwagon; Serverworks and Supermicro.
Supermicro is set to release servers and workadaystations using the AMD Opteron and it will use a BRCM chipset, implying that its Serverworks sub has got Opteron glue, too...
This is big news, and I'm sure there are a few giddy AMD executives out there. I hope we get opportunities to play with this gear. Check it out.

Wow two big Intel power houses making Opteron boards/chipsets, something like this might make me build one of these as a server once i get out of school.

I guess I have a bigger question... I know Broadcom/ServerWorks chipsets are geared at servers, but they also make some chips that also provide AGP and other workstation needs... but will Supermicro be making any Opteron workstation boards?

I'm in the market at getting a dual processor system and the two choices for me are the Xeon's and the Opteron processors (currently leaning towards the former)... but if Supermicro will be making a workstation motherboard, that will help simplify my search for a motherboard :D

From the article:

And on the workadaystations?

* 2 and 4 CPU models
* Up to 24Gb of RAM (6 * 4Gb modules)
* Built in boardcom TOE gigabit
* AGP 8X/Pro 110
* Optional SCSI or SATA adapters on board
* ZCRaid compatible for either SCSI or SATA RAID

This is the first I've heard of Opteron-based workstations. Or any Opteron based platform with an AGP slot for that matter. Anyone know what release timeframe might be on these chipsets/motherboards?

Hmmmm. I'd take anything posted by Mike with a large dose of crystalline Sodium Chloride.

I don't see anything on the Serverworks/Broadcomm/SuperMicro sites yet.

Mike's the Inquirer. :p Eva would be a minion.

I'll hold off hopes till either of the actual companies put out a press release.

Not that I'm personally interested in x86-64 mind.

Eva Glass is an anagram of Las Vegas (most of the Inquirer's "reporters" are aliases). Since Fudo (Fuad Abazovic) is their reporter in Vegas, I think it's safe to assume Eva is Fudo.

And Mageek & Co. have pretty good contacts, especially in AMD-related subjects. They usually get things right, even when they get the dates wrong.

No, Eva is far too well-spoken to be Fudo. His english can be a bit rough sometimes. :-)

And what's wrong with the Inquirer? Mageek gets it right pretty often, and he has a good dose of humor to go along with it.

and when the pricing comes down out of the stratophere, it might actually be worth it.

Supermicro making an AMD platform...VERY doubtful...

Think about it. Would Supermicro ruin a long term, close relationship with Intel? Not likely.

2x PIII 1Ghz (100Mhz FSB) + BX|2x PIII 933Mhz + i840|1x Celeron 500Mhz + BX for now

think about it
would supermicro ruin a strategic opportunity to maintain a relationship with a company that hasn't done anything "right", from the technical (not marketing, they got that right) standpoint, in several iterations?
itanium, netburst, rdram, prescott, failing to position centrino correctly, so on so forth
intel's in no position to play monopoly games, nothing on their roadmap / up their sleeve for at least a year or two, and when they do pull out their on-die memory controller and 64-bit extensions, that's when the price war begins :-p
and a year or two is a long time in this sector
