Snow-bound!

Posted by: Hooz on: 12/23/2004 07:15 PM [ Print | 29 comment(s) ]

Last night, Ohio was hit pretty hard with the nastiest snow storm in recent years. We got over 10 inches of snow, then rain, then more snow and as a result, the roads are downright treacherous. So, due to a snow emergency here in central Ohio, I am working from home today (VPN and Remote Desktop rule!). It'll take me a bit to thaw out after spending all morning shoveling my drive and three neighbor's drives, but I'll see if there is any news that I can scrounge up for you guys today.

Posting from Cincinnati here...all I have to say as a native Michigander, these people don't know how to deal with a dumping of snow! (We got about a foot of snow with freezing rain over top.) I've been trying to get home for Christmas (mid-Michigan) since yesterday morning...all to no avail! Perhaps i'll have better luck tomorrow morning. Anyone know how I-75 northbound is doing? I hope everyone has a very happy holidays in spite of ol' man Winter!!!

Here's a pic I snagged from the Cincinnati Enquirer today. Now do those doubting Thomas's believe us?

We got a little in Buffalo where I live, but nothing too bad. We got some of the snow-rain-snow frozen stuff too. In the last few years, we've had 24 inches in a day and 7 feet over 4 days, so we'll probably get something like that this year too.

Fort Wayne, IN.

Let's just say no load came in at work, so the stockers didn't have anything new to put up...which is bad considering it's a last mad rush before Christmas. With all the snow in Ohio (not to say we didn't get our share), trucks aren't likely to be making it here any time soon enough.

Oh, and it's currently -2*C here.

Sigh--No snow here in Milwaukee. But we've warmed up to a balmy 14F (about -11C). Was downright cold yesterday...

the aftermath

well, i'm stuck ~~~ sun melted some yesterday then the freeze froze the top layer, so ya move and drop 6-8" in the snow making new tracks and then them tracks are solid ice ~~~ 1st time ever stuck with a 4 wheel drive and 4whl low would not move ~~~ would not advise anyone else to try to get to me either ~~~ cabin fever hitting after 4 days, and some of my new shiney parts are due to arrive at work

Came from Maryland to Philly, PA last night around midnight. Snow started about 20mi away from philadelphia, there was at least 15+ minor accidents in that stretch. Fun stuff.

My wife and I flew back to visit my folks in Newark, Ohio on the 22nd. We made the drive from Columbus to Newark Wednesday night in a mixture of snow and rain with the air temp varying between freezing and a few degrees below. The lights worked at my folks place when we got in Wednesday night and the was the last electricity we had until we flew back to Denver yesterday (27 December).

We were "lucky" in the sense that my folks have always liked gas appliances so the stove and water heater continued to function although lighting the stove burners with a match was a hassle. They also had a gas space heater for their basement that was able to keep the house at about 65°F during the day. I'm not sure how long it will be before my wife forgives me for inflicting my relatives on her for five days with nothing to do but sit in the house and wonder when the power would be back on. Its not that we couldn't go out but the temps were between the high 20s°F during the day and around 0°F at night with lots of ice and frozen slush.

Unfortunately, I didn't take my digitial camera with me 'cuz nothing ever happens in Ohio.... May have some pics from my brothers.

Tyan S2466N-4M + 2X AMD 2400+ MP + 2 Gb RAM + Abit Siluro Geforce 3 Ti200 (64MB) + 2X WD 80GB + Mitsumi CD-RW and an Antec SX1040B Case. OS: CentOS 5. HP Pavilion zv6015 also running CentOS 5 but x86_64. Gigabit home network.
