So... What do YOU think of "IT"?

Posted by: Jim on: 12/04/2001 04:36 AM [ Print | 22 comment(s) ]

I'm sure all the geeks are well aware of this "IT" creation. You know, that famed inventor Dean Kamen had something new up his sleeve which was unveiled this morning. Segway didn't really shock the world (we knew it was a personal transportation device of some kind), but I'm truly impressed with it nonetheless. This could certainly be used for far more then shuttling my lazy butt around.

What do you all think about it?

[Ed - sigh, this is what I get for missing meetings. You can tell me what you think about "IT" once our forums are back online.]

quit with the thread crapping....

Anyway, I think I need one of those "IT's". I know IT has a real name, but IT just sounds cooler. I can already see it with a custom set of Billet wheels, and perhaps some Titanium Motocrass bars, maybe some anodizing here and there.... enough daydreaming... IT is cool :D

Neato is cool as long as ya got 3000 to throw around. If you do throw it my way i know some lonely processors that need me.

Well, as far as the technology involved in "IT" I think it's pretty darn cool. As far as revolutionizing the world, and "designing cities around it" I somehow doubt it. The inventor makes some very good points about not needing a 3000 lb vehicle to drive you 2 miles to work everyday, but I think if people were willing to give up the comfort of their air conditioned, weather-proof cars, they would be using something that is a little more time tested like ...um... I don't know... maybe a bicycle? (not to mention you can get a pretty nice bicycle for a lot less than $3000)

The pathetic state of our government will never change unless we stop electing politicians and start electing public servants. Remember: There was once a time when the term "politician" had a very negative connotation.

I don't think IT ( Ginger ) is all that. Sure is cool and I'm sure my Grandmother will want one for this Christmas, but not for the prices they are going for.

IT is a good alternative to the bike for people who cannot/won't ride a bike. One: IT can balance itself and a payload where bikes can't stand up without a kickstand. Two: bike saddles are a PAIN IN THE ASS!...literally.

Oh yes, the price. The Cannondale entry level bike I'm looking at (http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/02/ce/model-2VP8.html) starts at $2200+. I commute ten miles each day (weather permitting) to and from work so, yeah, I pay a little extra for my ride. My current ride is this http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/97/97_killerv900ht.html old horse and an updated late 80's Bridgestone RB-2 frameset with a Campy Chorus groupo.

Remember the Sinclair C5?, good on paper but people kept squashing them in real vehicles!

Only question I have about the "IT" is, Why?

I'll be back - when its too cold to race my car - Told you - Its freezing!!!

combine IT with one of those old hand-push lawnmowers, and you're in business -- if you're a gardner.

IT's a little too geeky. I'd rather spend the moola on a new titanium or carbon fiber frame for my bicycle. IT's not going to do anything to fight programmer's ass. Sure, they showed lots of fit people in "dress casual" clothes riding around on them, but you know it will really be lots of fat people in sweatpants riding them to the Haagen Daaz.

Super. Now all we need is an attachment for 'IT' to provide the rider with a non-stop feed tube of cola. Maybe there could also be robotic arm to feed fast food directly into their mouth (of course, there would have to be a proprietary, licensed, computer-controlled, sensor-laden servo mechanism to do this) when not sipping cola.

Really, why not just go for a walk? How lazy do we really have to be? 'IT' has a range of 15 miles (hopefully for the user) @ 12mph... Well, my bicycle commute is powered by one bowl of Malt-O-Meal which can give me an effective range of 25-30 miles @ 20mph.

Plus, I won't turn into a huge tub of lard.

Hopefully this is just a novelty and only people with special needs and/or broken legs will ever use it.....

Ready to start selling a new form of transportation? If the IT becomes as big as some predict (ha) I'll take one of your floor models at discount, Hacky. Forget 17 mph. Give me 170. They need to design cities are around Lamborghinis, not scooters. :D

I may not agree with your opinion, but I will defend to the death your right to express it.

I was also disapointed by "IT." I too was expecting some hovering, or flying. With that price tag, the only place I see IT going is in a Cash Money Music Video with some 20" Chrome Niches!!

Who wants to be a ballinare??

Of course all of the mods will vary depending on location. Around here ou are likely to see them with big nobby tires, and someone will figure out a way to mount a gunrack on one.

This kind of reminds me of those geriatric bulldozers they have available in some grocery stores for senior and corpulent citizens. Anybody remember those hysterical commercials for the Lil' Rascal? "I'm a lil' rascal in my Lil' Rascal!" Bbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

Don't forget the spoiler, and, of course the fast blinker -- which helps you TURN really fast. :D
