Supermicro AMD Opteron box star of builder show

Posted by: duke on: 05/12/2005 02:55 PM [ Print | 7 comment(s) ]

The Inquirer brings word that Supermicro's AMD Opteron-based boards were quite a hit at a recent system builder's summit.
Here in Monaco, the centrepiece of the AMD display was the Opteron Supermicro board, much rumoured, much discussed, and finally here in the flesh.
More information is available here.

You can find out more about Supermicro opteron motherboards e.g. here:

http://www.amdboard.com/supermicro_h8dce.html

Good to see Supermicro finally selling this stuff, but it doesn't look like anything special. No surprise there I guess, Supermicro are well known for making "vanilla" machines without fancy coloured PCBs, overclocking stuff etc. But there's not one feature that you can't already get in an opteron system that's already shipping. (At least with their intel systems, you can get goodies like IPMI which the _ultra-low-end_ vendors don't offer because it adds a couple of hundred $$$ to the system.)

Edit: So why, then, is the Supermicro system a hit? Looks more like a taiwanese OEM group playing catch-up to me. I don't suppose anyone else - and I mean anyone else - any other person, website, whatever, could corroborate the inquirer story? It's been a year or more since I last went to a big tech-fest, but when something is the "star of the show", it normally gets a little bit more attention than just being put on a desk and having a brochure stuck on top of it.

Because it's on top of a table and it's completely naked apart from that sexy brochure.

It would've been nicer if they, err, "opened her up". ;)

Now that sound's a bit to much like guro to me.

If you can lie on the floor without holding on, then you're not drunk enough.
