The 20" LCD Shootout: Dell versus Apple
Posted by: duke on: 04/28/2005 01:30 PM [ Print | 13 comment(s) ]
I'm a big fan of large LCDs, so posting a link to this Anandtech article comparing 20" displays from Apple and Dell seemed appropriate.
The Dell 2005FPW won us over not only as an improvement on the Dell 2001FP, but also as a standard that all other monitors must adhere to for excellent ratings in our future reviews. 20

Man, that 2005FPW is looking good. I wouldn't mind picking one up Me Webpage | If you always think like an expert, you'll always be a beginner. | "A handful of knowledgeable people is more effective than an army of fools" -Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed. |

I'd like the Dell 2405 even better However that 30" Apple looked great if you didn't look at the price tag. OSX and that display looked good together. i had a weird experience with the apple 30". i went on down to compusa where they always have a current mac dispaly, and started to play around looking at images. within 2 minutes i had a raging headache. i thought that was weird i so i walked away for a bit. the headache left shortly after, so i went back, and the headache returned. maybe the refresh rate was out of sync with the fluorescents, maybe it was a coincidence, i dont know... but i find it really hard to like that display |

I've had my 2005FPW since November of last year and I LOVE it! The only display that could tear me away would be the 2405FPW, and I'm working on that Although... The 17" widescreen on my new Inspiron 9300 (1440x900) is pretty amazing too... 2CPU.com - Because two are always better than one! Are you folding? Its a dell. How can that impress you? You get what you pay for and if its a high-end monitor for very cheap, then that normally means you'll end up with a steaming pile of shit. Just my opinion though, but my experiences with dell thus far have been bad and they are quite a bother if you have the slightest trouble with anything. I'd rather pay twice as much to get something half as good then buy from dell. |

I was a bit sceptical about buying a Dell too, but after a few days using my new 2405FPW this was over instantly The 2405FPW is a beautiful monitor, having very good colors, pretty good pixel transition times, lots of inputs and a very high viewing angle. Too bad this monitor is a few 100 dollars more expensive in Europe than in the US. |

I guess you didn't happen to notice that the two monitors tested used the identical LG screen. |

The physical LCD screens don't make or break the display. It's the chips that interface the DVI connection to the screen & drive the screen which cause the wide variations. Noise or fluctuations at the chipset level can make even the best screens look like crap. Kinda like the transmission in a race car. You could have the best engine, frame, and tires in the world, but if your tranny sucks, you'd be lucky to even finish the race Mini-ITX Systems: AOpen MP965-DR Core2Duo Mobility T7500 4MB L2, 4GB DDR2 (Vista MCE)| MSI Industrial 945GM2 Celeron M 430 | Intel Little Valley 2 (Firewall) | Via EPIA EN-1500 (Firewall)| |

I noticed they had the same panel, but the overall package you get from dell sucks. I tried one of their 'top of the line' 17" lcds and was blown away by its bad quality. |

I thought that that bit of information was the most interesting (and surprising) part of the review really. I know both companies are rebadge masters these days, but still. Good detailed review, cheers duke. |

OTOH Samsung makes a 24" WS LCD PVA panel for ~$1500. I'm not sure if the response time is as quick as the Dell. Iwill DH800, 2GB (2x1024) OCZ4002048PFDC-K 2.5-3-3-8-1t Dual Prestionia Xeons 2.4 M0 @1.50v 220Mhz 3.3GHz Location: 42.3 N 122.9 W Medford, Oregon, USA |

The apple displays are some of the best, but I always go with dell because they are probably about as good and a lot less expensive. Got my 17" w/ dvi for a cool 250 a while ago. |
