The wait continues for Windows for AMD64

Posted by: Jim on: 01/05/2004 03:02 PM [ Print | 9 comment(s) ]

The Inquirer has yet another snippet posted about the release delays of Microsoft's version of Windows XP for those of you running AMD64-based processors.
But while we're waiting for someone at Microsoft to pull the "on switch", there are 64-bit games for Windows waiting for the say-so.

In the meantime, it just looks as if everyone will have to wait. Is the Microsoft delay due to Intel influence? That's possibly a conspiracy theory too far. Microsoft is perfectly capable of delaying its own products without any interference from anyone else, thank you very much.
The wait continues.

I've only heard of one major game with a 64-bit version, that's Unreal Tournament.

The rest of the games (since they used plurals) are probably unheard of or simply the same games with the recoded UT2k3 engine.

64-bit versions of games aren't necessarily faster, depends on the stress of the engine. UT2k3 is CPU intensive, so 64-bit calculations will speed it up I'm sure. Doom3, John Carmack has already said, will not have a 64-bit version as 64-bit pointers will cause it to suffer performance wise.

Are the majority of people waiting for XP64 gamers? First thing Id want is a 64bit folding console :D I guess there are many more people with Athlon64 and FXs than there are people who have dual opteron systems? Hence the focus on games rather than workstation apps?

I am guessing part of it is that MS did not expect the AMD 64 bit stuff to sell as well as it has been. People are buying them up and AMD finally has some big name OEM box distributors (sans Dell).

While D3 may not take advantage of 64bit processors, D4 may. At the rate id is going with D3, D4 (and possibly D5) will have long been released before D3 comes out :p

America's Army (AA:O), also has a fully functioning AMD64 codebase.

At this rate, UT2K3/2K4 AMD64 and AA:O AMD64 Linux clients will be released long before XP64 is.

Driver support is still lacking.

I don't think I'm breaking the NDA rules too seriously by telling you that, if you plan to get an amd64 system and run the beta on it, you should be looking at an nVidia motherboard.

I forget how many different hardware devices XP has been tested against (just with the in-box drivers) but it's a LOT. That's a lot of drivers to port and test.

What the hell are you talking about? Doom4? I've heard of no such thing, at least not from id. If John Carmack doesn't say it, it's probably not going to happen.

That is, of course, unless he's put up a new .plan I haven't read.

sorry Koala, was just a joke. Doom 3 has been been anticipated for so long. I think some of the original previews of it came out in a Steve Jobs apple speach talking about apple and the nvidia geforce 2 vid cards (ages ago). I know that id and their team are the best (or at least up there) and they have put much time and skill into developing and refining it. This still does not change the fact that I and probably 50 million gamers cannot wait until the day it comes out :D I am not sure if the links are still up, but I know on several sites you could pre-order it for the estimated December 2003 release date. Unlike MS, Apple, or Linux products, I am 120 percent confident that the wait will be worth it (even if it is just going to really shine in 3rd party games and mods that use the engine).

America's Army runs off the UT2k3 engine.

The UT2k3 engine runs terribly in Linux. It has a good framerate, but without the same Shader support as Direct3D (way to go OpenGL), it doesn't look half as good. At times it will run with a higher framerate, but that's due to not actually drawing things the same quality or with the same effects as in Windows.

OpenGL's Shaders are way behind Direct3D's at the moment.
